Athletics and Admissions?

A friend has a daughter who is interested in attending UW. Her grades are good but below the normal standards for admitted students to UW. She has been put on an athletic recruitment list for a non-major sport and would be a walk on with no scholarship if admitted. The coach said being on the list would be a consideration for her admission. Someone in admissions said it wouldn't be, that admissions was separate and they didn't even have access to the athletic information. Needless to day, they're confused but don't want to be annoying. Anyone have experience with this?

The only thing I heard was years ago, a friend’s kid who was a recruited athlete and in line for a very small scholarship ($1000) was told he had to have a 22 ACT or better to get admitted. He retook it a few times until he got the 22. This sounds different from your friend’s situation (walk-on).

I am currently being recruited for a non-major sport that gives no scholarships. From what I understand, admissions either admits or denies you. If they admit you, that’s it. If they deny you, the admissions liaison from athletics picks up your file. They have weekly meetings with an admissions rep and the athletic academic advisors. Basically, the academic advisor makes an argument for you if you aren’t automatically admitted. Good luck!

My child who was being recruited for a non-major sport definitely got a boost because of the direct intervention of the coaching staff. Unless something has changed during the past 4 years, if the athlete is “otherwise qualified” a word from a coach will definitely enhance an applicants chances for admission.
