Athletics and Nursing

Hi. I am a upcoming senior who has already decided that I want to become a Pediatric Oncology Nurse. The catch is, I'm a very good cross country and track athlete. I already have D1 and D2 colleges talking to me and want to go to college on a scholarship. When I asked one of the coaches what the hardest major to keep up with athletics is, he said nursing. I've heard from others that it's demanding and I'm not sure what to do. Should I go for a D2 college and still do nursing or drop my athletics?

IMHO
I would take the D1 offer and experience the life of an elite college athlete.
Get a BA/BS degree in a science.
Then decide if Nursing is still in the cards, you may change your mind.
How can you pass up the chance to get world class training and competing against other elite athletes?

The thing is, even though Im good enough for a D1, I’m not sure how to training who take on my body and time. It’ll be a struggle itself to keep up with it.

You will have trainers and coaches supporting your athletic development at the D1 level.
It is not like juggling high school and home life, you have help balancing athletics and academics-the singular focus is on your development.
Yes, it will be demanding and physically taxing BUT you have to decide if you can mentally handle the stress.
Nursing can be in your future, no matter what you decide, it just may be delayed a few years if you decide to go D1.
Good friend was a D1 athlete so I saw the push/pull of the life of an elite college athlete.
Good luck.

I hate to put it so bluntly but nursing isn’t exactly the most competitive field. You will almost always be able to end up in it. You won’t ever get the chance to be an elite college athlete ever again.

can you give me tips on how you are so good at track/cross country? I don’t really have time for a lot of practice…

College123college: well you have to have a training plan. I have a coach that does that for me. But you have to dedicate a lot of your time and effort. You should look into joining a club for it.
