Say you want to be in athletics if you apply to Penn. Would you have to be considered a recruit?

Some of the teams will take walk-ons. That means you don't make the coach's list of recruits who get some help with admissions. You should contact the coach of your sport and see what the situation is.

Well, I am interested in playing tennis. But I have no prior experience and I just want to do it as a extra activity in college. I know I would not qualify as a recruit but does that mean I cant be apart of it?

this goes with any college.

penn, and most colleges, have club versions of most of the sports. that means basically anyone can play....in a lot of the cases, people who've never played can even join (though probably not in all sports). often, they're just like pick-up games here and there....sometimes they can get a bit more competitive.

they also have intramural teams....but those are intended for people who played the sports in high school but didn't want to or couldn't play in college. usually, they have try-outs for them.

either way, there's probably a site on the penn website that gives more details about tennis specifically.

actually i'm pretty sure it's the other way around. i did one club team and one intermural team and intermurals are definitely less serious. they are usually just a group of friends organized in the week before the season starts, and the season lasts about 3 or 4 weeks. for club sports, there are tryouts, practices, uniforms, and a fee to play. intermurals are also played only on campus, whereas club sports usually do a fair amount of traveling.

oops, sorry.

haha no worries

excel, since you don't have any experience, i'd say try out for club if you're feeling ambitious. otherwise, you should probably see if they have tennis intermurals or even just find a friend who plays. there are a good number of people who just go over to the courts for fun with a friend when they have time. to be honest, i don't think it would work out with varsity, since a few of my friends who play competitively all the time both with their high school team and in outside tournaments (one is top 5 in the state as a junior) didn't see any interest from the coach at penn.
