I read somewhere and i believe when i went to decision day at davis the tourist mentioned that davis doesnt compete with all other div 1 schools for ex. was it UCLA? im not sure. thats why i was wondering if someone could explain/clear things up for me. id like to know why davis doesnt compete with ucla??

of course they can't compete well with ucla. ucla is among the elite in college atheletics. few other schools come close to matching their programs.

Because we just started being officially DI this year, we have yet to establish recognition for our sports. As our sports teams get better and better, the NCAA/Conference will match us with more competitive teams. For example, last year the basketball teams only faced two or three nationally ranked teams (guys played top ranked Texas while the girls faced Stanford). These ranked teams come from very competitive conferences. The Big West, which is what UC Davis is in, doesn't have much reputation of being an elite conference.

Football-- we are Division I-AA, meaning we play Division I schools under the AA conference which is not bowl eligible / large football scholarships. Every now and then we will play a DI-A school to match our skills, though.

You won't see UCD on national television until we have established ourselves or if we're playing a nationally ranked team (and even then, if the media thinks it's going to be a blowout, they won't televise it).

When you join DI you have to go through this probationary period of like 3 or 4 years or something like that.

Davis JUST joined Division 1. I've know doubt they'll be competiting with Pac-10 teams soon, though. I think there's a wait time or something.

We play all D-1 schools in all sports except football. We played UCLA in basketball this past season actually

i hope we have a home game vs ucla this year. that would be sick!

The link to the UC Davis athletics message board is:

Aggie Sports Talk - Message Board - Yuku

You can get lots of information there from hardcore UC Davis fans.

To be more precise, UC Davis football plays in the the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA).

UC Davis occasionally plays against other teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A).

For instance, UC Davis beat Stanford 20-17 in 2005.
UC Davis played against then ranked #22 Texas Christian University in 2006.
UC Davis played at San Jose State in 2007 and will play them again in San Jose on 8/30/08.

If I can recall my foggy memory, after the UC Davis basketball team beat Stanford at UC Davis, the UCLA basketball head coach said that this was the reason a Pac-10 team should not play against midmajors at their home court. Oregon State did play at UC Davis on 12/7/07.
