Athletics

Hey everyone! I'm Marcella, a third year student at the University of Chicago. Many of you may have met me, as I work in the admissions office as a tour guide. I'm also a member of the Women's Varsity Soccer team and would love to answer any questions about athletics at U of C. Or, if you just got in and you plan on playing sports, share your enthusiasm here on this thread!

A bit about our teams:

Just under 600 undergraduates get involved each year. There are nine teams for men (baseball, basketball, football, wrestling, soccer, track and field, cross country, swimming and diving, and tennis) and eight for women (softball, basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball). We are a Division III institution, which means we do not give out athletic scholarships. But I think DIII is perfect because the emphasis is on academics before athletics, and not the other way around.

We have many club teams, as well. We have badminton, archery, table tennis, rugby, ultimate frisbee, ice hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, crew, fencing, sailing, waterpolo, numerous forms of martial arts, and much more!

And if you're not interested in varsity or club sports but would still like to participate in athletics, you can become one of the over 6,000 students (between the undergrads and grads) that compete each year in intramural sports. Some of my favorite intramurals include inner-tube waterpolo, kickball, dodgeball, croquet, foosball, and even chess!

Check out all these sports and find out how to contact a coach, see a game, or use the facilities at athletics.uchicago.edu!

Hey marcellad!

I just got deferred EA, but am still hopeful!

Anyway, I was wondering how recruiting goes at schools like UChicago that have to rely on the students getting accepted into the school… I’m really interested in playing women’s basketball and have been talking to the coaches!

You’re already doing the right thing! There are a few ways that someone can find themselves on a varsity team at the University of Chicago.

First, you can contact one of our coaches by finding their email address at athletics.uchicago.edu and say that you’re interested in applying or have already done so.

Sometimes a coach can find you, either because you’re on some national athletic register or you’re at a tournament they are scouting and they see you play.

With both of these options, when you’re talking to a coach, make sure you demonstrate your interest in UChicago. A lot of prospective athletes come through our offices at admissions, and the ones that stand out not only love their sport and would like to play in college but love our school and would like to play at this college.

If they can, a coach will come out to see you play either in a high school match or during a tournament. Otherwise you can send in film or have a hs or traveling coach contact the U of C coach and talk about your skills on the court/field/pitch/track.

There’s also a few students each year who never contact the coach prior to coming here in September, but who realize they’d like to play. They’re called walk-ons, and they try out for the team at the very first practice. If the coach likes them they could find themselves on the team immediately. Otherwise they might be asked to come back for a practice season (for example, soccer’s competitive season is in the fall and practice season is in the spring). Unlike at some other schools, walk-ons at the University of Chicago really do have a chance of becoming an integral part of the team. All the same, I do recommend that any prospective athlete contact the coach!

Taypi31, contact the basketball coach again and tell him that you got deferred but are still interested in UChicago. Perhaps he can suggest a way for you to make your application stronger. And in any case, having someone at UChicago rooting for you- whether it is a coach, a professor, a researcher, etc- can’t hurt. Good luck and hopefully I’ll see you next fall!

Hi! I play soccer at my school, but have been out for injury this past year so I will probably be looking to walk on. Also I have also been looking into rugby and was wondering some general information about the team and the sport?!

Hi! Rugby is a wonderful sport to play at the University of Chicago. It is a club sport that is offered to both men and women. One of my friends plays on the women’s team and absolutely loves it! One of the best games each season is the game in which the women’s team dresses up in ridiculous 80s prom dresses. Always a good game to watch :)

If you want more information, check out these two websites:

For men-- [UChicago Rugby - Home](http://rfc.uchicago.edu/)
For women-- [Women’s Rugby](http://rugby.uchicago.edu)

These websites have tons of great stuff to check out, including photos, fun facts, and people to contact if you’re interested in playing.

Hi, I was wondering if there was any recruitment procedure for badminton?

Hey! I checked out their website ([U</a> of Chicago Badminton Club](http://badminton.uchicago.edu/index.htm)) and they just said to stop on by a practice if you want to join the team. If you have specific questions about the club that the website doesn’t answer, feel free to contact the club president. His contact info is listed there too.

purple- The only recruiting that occurs is for their NCAA III intercollegiate sports. For everything else, I would assume you could just show up and sign up.

Thanks Marcella and KafkaDream for clearing that up!
