Athletics

Just curious is there any attention paid to athletic events at Columbia?

rofl. Of course there is. Not as much as at a Big 10 school or anything, but big groups of my friends go to football games. I didn’t go to a single one. But I feel like I was in the minority for not going to a single football game. I think most people show up for at least one. I think.

EDIT: On the other hand, I lived on a bro-ish floor.

I think ivy league basketball got some good attention last season. With a new coach, and one that people are excited about, that’s a sport that’s lucky enough to have a growing profile. We’re the golf and tennis conference champs. Baseball is solid. We have a handful of great fencers.

That said, the majority of the big sporting events happen up at the Baker complex. Baker is all the way at the top of the island, set against the Harlem River. This means that, unlike big 10 schools, game day happens mostly off campus. Way off campus. You can’t tailgate and walk there with your bros. People go to these events, of course. But, they don’t consume the campus.

Not many people attend games. I used to go to the gym when basketball games ended. There were many more parents and young kids than students.

As someone who is at EVERY home football and basketball game (spirit groups represent!), I can say:
Football games dont’ generally have great turnout. The first one or two are nice weather, so people sometimes come to those. Homecoming always has a lot of people (and a lot of free stuff!), but once you get to the games in November, it’s almost always raining/miserable weather, so you really don’t get as many student fans.
Men’s basketball usually has a decent turnout for Ivy League games and is a lot of fun. Their preseason non conference stuff is on weird days and sometimes only have about 10 student fans.
Women’s basketball games usually don’t have a very good turnout at all, which is sad, because they have some badass players. Again, sometimes theres only about 10 student fans.

I can’t really say much about the other sports. Volleyball I think usually has a pretty good turnout, and can be a lot of fun to watch, but I’ve only been to one or two games for that.
