I would say Tech is pretty safe; it's in the city but the campus is still relatively secluded. Just don't go wandering downtown alone or in the middle of the night and you'll be safe.

I go there, and I can say I feel safe. One reason why: the school is more towards the northern part of the city, whereas most of the crime is in the very south of the city.

I've walked around at night (alone in many circumstances) and still haven't been hassled. Also, most of the crimes in Atlanta's crime stats tend to happen to "those who bring it on themselves". Basically, those who join gangs, who have priors, owe money to launderers, deal drugs, etc.

Another note I'd like to make is how much crime in ATL has DRAMATICALLY decreased since Mayor Shirley Franklin took office.

I would say there are valid concerns. I have my daughter carry a dummy wallet since most are looking for quick cash/backpack lifts. Contact the Georgia Tech Police force and get on their crime alert email list. Like campuses in any major city, there is crime.

As long as your daughter either stays on campus at night or stays in groups she'll be perfectly fine. The campus is very safe and the only possible problems come from people off campus who wouldn't go after a group, the area around Tech doesn't have the gangs that movies depict ATL as having. I have walked around the Tech area of ATL late at night on several occasions alone and nothing more serious than being verbally harassed by some beggars has happened, but I still would not recommend it, especially for a female (don't mean to sound sexist but that's my opinion). Overall though the area is very safe, much safer than I felt in downtown St. Louis the one time I was there at night.

I'd rather walk around downtown atlanta then downtown where I live in Savannah. We have the same crime rate as Atlanta, and were about 1/25 the size minimum.
