My d is seriously considering applying to Richmond. How is the feel of the school for a liberal, white, Jewish kid from New England?

I would consider Emory instead of Richmond..Emory has a great location in Atlanta and is a northern school in the south..from the other admitted students I've talked to, a lot of them sound like your d.

Thanks so much - I would love it if she'd look at Emory, but she really doesn't want to go any further south - she loves winter. It's also too big for her. She was surprised that she liked Richmond as much as she did, so now's the time that we're trying to dig a little deeper to see if she might be happy there. Do you know any specifics about Richmond's "feel"?

Did she consider applying to the smaller campus (about 650 students) that is part of Emory University, Oxford College? Oxford is a liberal arts 2 year program, where the students attend Oxford for their first 2 years and then attend Emory College for their junior and senior years. My D (who sounds like your D, except mine does NOT like winter!) was waitlisted at Emory College and the waitlist letter suggested that she apply to Oxford, and said that it would not have any effect on her application to Emory. She was accepted at Oxford, and I was told that the deposit would be applied to her Emory College account if she were admitted to Emory and if she chose to attend there. If she completes all 4 years, she will graduate with an Emory University degree. When we visited Emory/Oxford last weekend we met a student who was admitted to both campuses and selected Oxford.

Emory is a great school, but since your asking about Richmond I'll tell you as much as a I can based on what a friend who goes there has told me. I'm going there in the fall too. The school is pretty homogeneous as far as race and class go. Most of the students are white and wealthy. Politically its pretty even conservative vs. liberal. It might seem more conservative though since compared to other colleges it is, since most are very liberal. Also, there is probaby a conservative vibe due to the fact that there isn't coed housing and there really a lot of traditions. I know there is a jewish group on campus and I think there is a jewish studies major. Most of the kids are from the north New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, etc. I dont think she would have any problem fitting in. If you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer
