I'm from the midwest and i am used to very cold winters, but will i be depressed the whole time at cornell?
Does the weather/atmosphere of the campus make u want to die?

nah...it's in the 80s/90s right now. For comparison, Ithaca is like the Upper Midwest, harsh winters, normal summers, and really NICE fall and spring seasons.

Not as cold as the Upper Midwest, but snowier.

come on cog. if you'd done your research and read some college forums you'd know everyone's depressed all the time at cornell.

actually, I really like the weather. SuNa, the Midwest isn't snowy?

Its not too bad, this past year was pretty nice all year, some cold days in the winter, but nothing terrible. I'm from Rochester, so I'm used to it, but its really nothing too terrible to deal with. Just bundle up and try to ski/get out (prob by cab/car) to go to places other than your dorm room. You really have to make the best out of winter to enjoy it, otherwise youll just be upset, so do a bunch of activites, get a scarf/jacket, and have fun.

heck yea the midwest is snowy. Have you been to Wisconsin or Minnesota during January, it's just that the past few winters have been starting later and later. Damn Global Warming or perhaps good global warming :D

just start to love skiing/snowboarding and hockey and you'll be set for your winters

I'm a Minnesotan but was surprised at the loads of snow Cornell gets. I've been told it has to do with being east of a Great Lake. Here in St. Paul we occasionally have a winter with very little snow, but I think that kind of thing is much rarer in upstate NY. Actually, I miss the snow and cold of my childhood. It's more fun than today's global warming clouds and mush.

Also from MN, and although last year seemed like an exception with the snow rule, it is WARMER in Ithaca in the winter than Minnesota, at least I believe so. In MN, it gets too cold to snow.

No snow because of it being too cold is depressing.

Are the nearby lakes too cold to do anything in/on them?

probably duing parts of jan-feb, though i believe fishing will still be open

wait can we play ice hockey...or do we risk falling through

you probably could around the river part ... but just join an intramural ice hockey team at Cornell. It'll be easier.

bump********

cogdawg, in the summer and fall Cayuga Lake is a good place to sail. it doesn't freeze in the winter but I'm sure it gets pretty cold. No one is allowed to swim or walk on Beebe Lake as far as I know, and it's only five feet deep anyway. If you want to go swimming you'll have to either go to a pool on campus or swim illegally in the gorges. (or is it just illegal to jump?)

you get a lot of snow due to the lake effect. ithaca is in the finger lakes region.
