◕‿◕ Attempting the impossible UC to UC transfer "please help"

First of all thank you for reading my post, and sorry for my bad grammar :(

I am currently going to UCR and will be in my 2nd year after the spring quarter ( I am a freshman right now). As much as i love UCR, i still want to go to higher ranked schools :)

The schools that im hoping for are UCI , UCSD,UCLA,USC

I am currently a philosophy major with 3.47 GPA by the end of my spring quarter I'll have a 3.5+, just don't know the exact numbers

I've read the UCLA philosophy department's general catalog and Im trying to take as many classes as possible required for UCLA before applying to transfer.

For EC i don't have much I've only been to one club, because i spent most of my time working in the UCR library, does work count for EC ?

Now here are my questions >.< because when i try to get help from the UCR transfer office, they told me they only handle students that want to transfer in to UCR, not out.

I understand I can't go over 120 units, and I should be over 90 units, so can I Apply to transfer right after 90 units + or so ? or do I have to wait till the end of sophomore year to apply for transfer ? what Im confused about is that can I transfer whenever after 90 units +
( whats a good unit amount to transfer ?)

Also is philosophy a good major to be transferring to other school ? is it a impacted major? Im willing to change major to give myself a better chance if needed.

And is there any tips you guys have for a confused student like me about transferring :?

Now last but not least: thank you for reading my post and god bless!

All I have to say is make sure the prereqs you are taking at UCR DEFINITELY match up with the prereqs the other UC wants (call the UC and ask them class by class)…good luck!

it’s actually very likely you can transfer. I got into UCD Political Science w/ 3.78 gpa from “other four year”.

A friend got into UCLA from UCR last year with a 3.3 GPA for Women Studies. Make sure you dont pick an impacted major. Philosophy has a near 70% admit rate. I picked Pre-Political Science this year, and wasnt even considered -_-.

list of preferred transferees

California CC transfer
four year to CC transfer
UC to UC transfer

EVERYONE ELSE IN STATE…

out of state…

it’s definitely possible, just plan carefully.

^ actually, it is:

CCC to UC
UC to UC
then Other four year to UC

UC to UC is much easier than CSU to UC and since budget cuts, UCs are accepting more out of state students and international students.

philosophy is one of the least impacted majors, and if you enjoy it, I would definitely go for it.

As far as the units thing… I would transfer right after 90 quarter units. You are transferring because you want to go to a better school, so, presumably you would want to spend the most time at that “better” school as you can.

About the EC thing. I did only a few ECs and worked almost not at all and got into UCLA for philosophy. I think you’ll be ok with just working. They really care about academic strength and major preparation the most. (So get the highest GPA you can!!)

Make sure you complete the general education pattern at your current school so you don’t have to take any GE at your new school (at least that’s how it works at UCLA).

And heed what sandaboy said about prerequisites. I would recommend calling the transfer centers of the schools you are looking at, to see if they have any advice for choosing the appropriate classes. Maybe ask the philosophy department? Although taking the precisely correct prereqs for philosophy is probably not as important as for more impacted majors, you do want to give yourself the best chance as possible.

I wish you luck :D

Oh, and the only thing i know about the philosophy department at Riverside is that they have Eric Schwitzgebel. I’m not sure how great of a teacher/philosopher he is, but I sure do appreciate his blog where you gives advice on getting into philosophy grad school: [The Splintered Mind: Applying to Philosophy Ph.D. Programs, Part I: Should You Apply, and Where?](The Splintered Mind: Applying to Philosophy Ph.D. Programs, Part I: Should You Apply, and Where?)

Thank you!!! guys i really appreciate this and thank you soo much for putting the time and effort into explaining the concepts of transferring for me
Not to sound greedy but any more advices >.< ?

how’d you get that goofy smily face in the title?

more advice… have you seen [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx) ?

It won’t give you a better chance of getting in. but at least it will give you at least some idea of what the likelihood is of getting in. (though i don’t know how useful it is for UC - UC transfers)

i just copy the face and pasted XD from a website lol

I am trying to do the same thing you are trying to do haha. I go to UCR too trying to transfer next year as business econ major. From what I’ve learned, you just need to raise your GPA to 3.6+ in order to have a shot at UCLA. But UCI and UCSD, it is much easier from what I’ve heard. And also, your major is philosophy so it would be much better than me… you should also finish your GE and get a UC reciprocity which doesn’t require you to take any GE classes when you actually transfer.

I’m a sophomore at UCR rite now, so far:

accepted: UCSD (human biology)
rejected: UCLA
pending: UCB, UCI, UCSB, UCD, and sum oos’s

GPA: 3.45 (took the toughest science courses including organic chem)
Major: Biology
EC: same as every1 else
essay: 10!

…not as hard as everyone makes it out to be

@mj2323

Did u take math 9C?? I am trying to do econ major but they want year of calculus…
I was wondering because you’re science related major… did u have to take 9C?

@slee0103

no i stopped at math9B because they didnt require it for my major, i should have taken it anyway though, i heard it was easier than 9B

thanks guys my concern now is when to apply for transfer like spring fall , winter :/, should i apply early lol ?

Apply for Fall 2011. That means you submit your application by Nov 30, 2010.

◕‿◕

that’s pretty creepy tbh

it’s not impossible to transfer from UC to UC. i’m a sophomore at UCM and recently got into UCLA, UCSD, and UCSC

wow congrats XD would u mind shearing your Gpa,major and any other helpful informations if is possible T.T ?

thanks, i applied for psych and have a 3.82
as long as you fulfill UC Reciprocity (kind of like the IGETC or TAP for UC to UC transfer students) you’ll be eligible for admission and can surpass some pre-requisites at wherever youre planning to go. for instance, i never took a math course at UCM, yet every UC says at least one course Pre-Calculus or above is required. so reciprocity just means you finish the general education requirements at your current UC.
anything else?
