Attendance irregularity=rejection?

How important a factor is being regular at school? Does having too many absences without a good explanation hurt your chances significantly?

Unless it affects other areas (grades, negative mention in a recommendation), colleges won't even know about it. Don't worry about it.

Colleges don't ask about attendance at all. (College students skip lots of classes.) If your high school teachers or counselor mention that in letters of recommendation, that would be because you missed A LOT of class, and missing class affected your learning. If you are clear with your high school staff why you have to miss class, and still keep up with your studies, this shouldn't be a problem.

In our public school absences are recorded on transcripts. You guidance counselor can tell you if they will appear on yours or not. I agree with posters above that absences are probably not a big deal unless they've affected your grades.

my Ds transcript lists abscences...

absences are listed on transcripts -
my daughter has had significant absences throughout high school due to health problems - she went ahead and mentioned it in her personal statements and/or essays. So far it hasn't been questioned.

It is included on my transcript, but its just because i like to do more self study than school study. I just hope it doesn't matter a lot.

FWIW d had lots of absences freshman year (they appeared on the transcript--some schools report, but many do not) due to health reasons. She didn't bother to explain it on apps since her grades were fine. It doesn't seem to have had a negative impact on her admissions results at all. Good luck.

meaning you skip school alot? can't get out of bed in the morning? it is all too easy for you?

it all depends on what colleges/universities to which you are applying - do you participate in any sports or clubs?
at my kids high school if you are not in school by 8:15 am you may not participate in any EC's on that day.
Some schools won't care about that but with a selective school you are competing against students who got themselves to school everyday.
If an interview is required and it comes up - how will you explain it?

MD_mom - yep - probably if only freshman year it won't matter - mine was on homebound for a quarter during freshman year and those days didn't count as absent. She did miss 20 days junior year - so felt an explanation was in order - fearful that there might be a problem since her problems are not completely resolved but so far so good.

Well, i dont need teachers to explain me stuff. I can do on my own, so its not like i dont go at all, but my attendance wont be more than 70%. ECs are a different system here in pakistan.
