Hey,
I have applied to a four-year university and am still waiting to receive a response from them. In the meantime, I also applied to a community college so that I could have a safety net in case the university turned me down (my grades and test scores should be good enough, but I know that admission is still never guaranteed). I did this because I likely will not hear back from the university for at least another few weeks, and in the event they turn me down, had I not submitted my application anywhere else it would have been too late to apply to any of the other local colleges for the upcoming semester.
The community college accepted me almost right away and wants to do my New Student Orientation ASAP. Without really thinking about it, I scheduled it for the upcoming week, but I am wondering if it’s a good idea to attend when I know that I will not go there if the university accepts me. Is it ok to go ahead and attend the orientation at the CC as long as I can find a way to avoid signing up for the classes up front? I think they told me you can technically wait up until days before the classes begin to officially register but they obviously encourage registration sooner rather than later. I just want to see if the university accepts me before I commit to registering.
Can you reschedule for a time after your decision date from your first choice?
Well, I don’t know when the decision from my first choice will come - could be as early as this week or as late as December. But yes, I can reschedule the orientation. I was just wondering if there would be any harm in attending now or if I should reschedule.
When would you enter? Are we talking this January or in the fall of 2017? If your entering in the fall then it is strange they would be having you pick classes now. Is this an orientation or an accepted students event?
My vote is to attend the event for the experience and meet new people but do not commit to anything you can’t get out of.
You need to understand what would be involved in withdrawing from the CC. What are your options for when to pay, and how do you get your money back if you don’t attend? How goes clad registration fit into this?
What @intparent said. The key questions are: When do you pay a deposit, when do you pay tuition, and up until what point are those refundable if you do not enroll?
If you don’t have to pay for orientation, go. If nothing else, you can ask those questions so you know whether to register for classes or wait.
If you register for classes, and you are accepted at your first choice U, don’t forget to drop the classes and formally withdraw on time for any refunds and to make sure you don’t wind up with a phantom transcript full of failing grades for CC classes you never attended.
MassDaD68, it is an orientation for accepted students, and I am enrolling for January 2017.
I don’t know when you have to pay a deposit or tuition, I will have to call them and ask them. Thanks for all the advice so far everyone!
