I was considering attending SBU, and I was just wonder what is it like for those who attend SBU and are in EOP…
Are you held to a different standard than other students?
Are you put in the “bad” dorm? Or are there more options because you go in a summer before everyone else?
And finally, how are the meal plans while on EOP? (If that’s even covered)
I’m at day 1 in the EOP summer program here at Stony. So far it’s been great, everyone here is nice and it seems like a nice atmosphere. The summer program is completely free and we are placed in a corridor style building.
EOP students are not treated any differently than the general population however there are some perks to being an EOP student. Aside from the extra financial aid and book stipend, there is an incredible support system here. EOP students are given free tutoring for any class you need help in and counseling if you feel you are struggling. They call the EOP program a family and like a family, we look out for each other so you’re never alone.
You are not placed in a “bad” dorm, well at least not on purpose. Not all the dorms here are pretty but you’re not discriminated against for being an EOP student. Meal plans don’t differ to EOP students and it goes by the level that you choose when you fill out the New Student Preferences form.
Just know that being accepted into the EOP program is a privilege. This year there were over 8000 EOP applicants and only 185 were accepted. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try, it’s not easy to get into the program.

Do you take actual classes in the summer program?
And just to make sure, EOP doesn’t cover the meal plan?
And wow, those chances sound frightening… Are you allowed to apply more than once?
If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your GPA?
We do take actual classes in the summer program. Two of them are credited - africana studies and writing. Based on your math placement score, you will be placed into a math class which is meant to increase your score. You also have a choice of chem, physics, and research as a science class. The math and science classes are not the same as the classes in the fall. A lot of it is to give you a foundation so you can do better when you take the classes for credit in the fall.
EOP does not cover the meal plan however they do suggest that you choose bronze. Mainly because you can always add money if you run out but you can never take it out.
I’m not sure if you are allowed to apply more than once but I know that you can only apply for your freshman year. Unless you’re transferring but you have to transfer as an EOP student from another school.
My HS gpa was between 85 and 89.
Most of the students that apply to EOP get rejected because they either don’t stand out or don’t qualify. A big part of it is really just the lack of space. They would love to accept every EOP applicant but it’s just not possible. I’m assuming you’re going to be a senior so what I suggest is to get involved in school or your community. Show them that you have something to bring to the table. More importantly, show them that you want to go to school for a reason, not just because your parents want you to but because it’s your choice.
