hey guys.. i was thinking of applying to USC but heard that if u dont have a car you will have a terrible time at usc

is it really hard to be at USC without a car? or is it manageable?
what are the pros and cons of not having a car at USC?

You’ll be fine without a car. Trust me you don’t want to go too far from campus anyways for safety reasons. You’ll also meet plenty of people who have a car. You don’t want to be the one driving your friends around.

My son had a great first year without a car, but he felt somewhat limited by it. Public transportation was not the best; there were a few locations he needed to get to that took hours on the bus through some sketchy neighborhoods. BUT, he did have a few friends with Zipcar subscriptions, which is mainly how they got around for major outings. Zipcar is a great alternative to having your own car at USC.

Basically, if bringing a car means financial hardship, don’t worry–you’ll be fine without one, especially if you are getting involved with on-campus activities, clubs, sports, social groups. And you will have friends who do have cars, so you won’t get campus-fever. If, however, you can afford the car (and parking, gas, insurance, tickets !!) and you really need the freedom to go all over the city to find the best shopping, beaches, movies, restaurants, theme parks, whatever and whenever (like you need the best ramen in L.A. only found in a restaurant in Little Tokyo and it’s ten p.m. on a Sunday), a car will be handy.

My daughter went her first three years without a car and loved the experience at USC. No problems. She went many places with USC transport (i.e., Visions and Voices trips to theater, etc.), her campus religious group, and friends. It was not a problem at all not to have a car.

off campuus it sucks not to have a car so carpool

My D did not have her car freshman year and was fine without it. She brought it for the remaining four years when she was living off campus (but in the SC neighborhood) so she had parking. She didn’t use it a lot, but liked having it for shopping, etc.
