It is more computer than you need, but it is your bucks.

Unless you are into serious gaming,

you don't need such high level video

you don't need such a large hdd. I'd take some money instead and invest in an external hdd for audio/video storage and backup. Why? Much less likely to lose/have stolen/have break an external hdd.

you don't need the speed of a dual core processor for most student level work.

I'd spring for a dvd burner, not just a cd burner/dvd reader. The extra DATA storage capacity of a dvd will be useful, and the cost is not much more.

If you can, skip the MS Student and Teacher edition (unless it is very cheap) as you will no doubt be able to buy MS office at school for, say, $25 or so.

Complete care is a VERY good thing for students. My D has already had one screen replaced in less than two years of ownership.

the weight is not bad for a two spindle design.

you might want to consider upgrading to the WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) screen. The extra resolution is mighty handy when doing complicated assignments.

Pricewise, you're being hosed. You should check with your college to see what kind of deals they get. Then check sites like techbargains.com for the latest Dell coupons. Right now, you can do much better:

I'd agree with the above that a dvd burner is extremely useful. I've saved a lot of space using it. And the 15.4" screen is good, big enough but still portable.

I'd check out the www.notebookreview.com and go to forums and post what you need your laptop for and they might be able to find some good options for you. It all depends what you need your laptop for.
