I want to major in Applied Mathematics and Economics at possibly one these schools:

Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Northwestern, UChicago, Rice, UPenn, Swarthmore, Carleton, Williams, Pomona, Amherst(LACs ftw), Brown, UMich, Rutgers, MIT, Cornell, Darthmouth, WUSTL, UVA.

looks good!

in at all

^ "in at all"
Nobody can say with certainty that you will be admitted to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Brown, MIT, and the likes, but you have a decent shot. As for the state schools, you will almost definitely make it in.
And your username (sesquipedalian) certainly makes up for your lack of attention grabbing phrase :)

Haha. Your knowledge of the english vocabulary compliments your username.

I hate to be the negative one, but I'll tell you there are kids with your stats and similar profile all over NY and NJ who did not get into any of those schools other than Rutgers and Michigan.

To break it down neither your rank or SATs are particularly strong for top schools nor are your ECs a strengh. Then add in being Asian and strongest in math/science from NJ, well, all this makes you a very common profile at these schools.

With amazing recs and positioning anything is possible but I'd sure work on whatever you can-SATs for one.

Seeing as I only applied to four of the schools you listed, I only feel qualified to give an educated guess on those:

UChicago - Write a very good essay and unique essay (seeing your username leads me to believe you are capable of doing so.) MATCH

Northwestern - MATCH

WUSTL- Show some form of demonstrated interest if you're seriously considering it, MATCH

Rutgers- Safety

Keep in mind, these are just guesses. I was accepted to Northwestern, WUSTL, and Rutgers -- but am on the 'shortlist' for UChicago. I also think you will get into the majority of the schools on your list.

Best of Luck,

the Individual

NewYorka: Originality? I'm the e-in-c of my newspaper biotch. "strongest in math/science". I'm not too shabby at the humanities either, I just prefer math.

Hey Sesquinedalian...you shouldn't get so defensive when someone is trying to give you constructive criticism. Nobody is going to give you a good chance response if you hop down their throats like that.

altindiegirl: Spelling counts.

But, I guess you're right.

Ummm...that exactly illustrates the kind of behavior that will get you a bad response...

how did your SATs go down from March to May?

It befuddles me.

Epic fail...no jk...that still is a good score...

i think that honestly you have a good shot at all the top schools - just write good essays and you will be happy

A lot of people I know have gotten into Rice with much less impressive stats. I'd say your chances are great there, but that's really all I can speak to.
Good luck!

Perhaps "impudent strumpet" would behoove you? LOL I love this thread.

making USAMO is very impressive. You managed to get a 9 on the AIME (especially after 102, a good but not ridiculous score on the AMC)? That's outstanding. Making USAMO means you're one of the best math students in the country, and it should def. help your app.

I wouldn't consider myself to be a prostitute, and I'm no fan of Huxley either.

Unfortunately, my seemingly good results on the AIME were not enough to qualify me for the USAMO. There is always next year...

Well done...
To quote, "He did what she suggested and returned to his uneasy pacing of the room. 'Impudent strumpet, impudent strumpet. The devil Luxury with his fat rump and potato finger …'"

A Brave New World wasn't my cup of tea.
