Attention previous and current flute applicants

I was just wondering what you played/are going to play for auditions, how long you worked on your pieces/when you started, and where you applied (or are going to) and where you got accepted.
Also, if you took any lessons or did summer camps with prof xxx from xxx University/Conservatory.

Thanks.

Ok I’ll start:

I’m playing Mozart in G, Bach Sonata in Eb (might pick a different one, not sure yet), and Dutilleux Sonatine (kinda nervous about this one… haha)
I started preparing about two weeks ago.

I’m applying to:
Oberlin
NYU
U of Michigan
Boston U
Lawrence U
Bard
NEC
Manhattan SM
Clevaland Institute (maybe…)
and a couple local “easier” schools

definitely applying to first five, not so sure about the others.

I have taken a lesson with Keith Underwood (NYU) and am going to take one with Kathleen Nester (also NYU) in a week or so. I was also at Oberlin’s flute academy this summer (with Alexa Still).

Flute is one of the most competitive instruments with very few openings at top schools (1-3 freshmen each year per school), so you need to be very well prepared and have your pieces so finely honed that muscle memory will kick in. Almost all schools list the type of repertoire that they want for auditions and require pre-screening. You should be working with your private teacher to select pieces that meet requirements and which show you at your best- if you’re auditioning this season, you might want to consider using works that you’ve already polished for your pre-screen and then see if you have time to work up anything else before actual audition time. Check web sites of the schools on your list so that have it correct.

For example, CIM’s site lists this:
Flute

A prescreening video is required. An audio recording is acceptable, but video is preferred. To accommodate prescreening, applicants are strongly urged to submit applications well before the deadline of December 1.

Prescreen requirements:

Same as audition requirements (can be a different etude, piece, or orchestra excerpt than what is played for the live audition)

Audition requirements:

Undergraduate

All major and harmonic minor scales and arpeggios in two octaves (not required on video recording)
Three contrasting pieces or movements of pieces, one may be an etude

I can attest to the quality of the faculty at CIM; Joshua Smith is principal flute with the Cleveland Orchestra and Mary Kay Fink is also in the orchestra and doubles on piccolo. You will play in one of the school orchestras from day one and each has at least one performance in the famed Severance Hall. PM me if you have any questions and good luck to you!

A great resource for those looking to audition for flute programs this year, is Jeanne Baxtresser’s new weekend class at Carnegie Mellon, Columbus Day weekend in October. The focus is college auditions (undergraduate and graduate) and students will learn about repertoire choices, stage presence, making CD’s and other aspects of the college audition. Their website is [Flute Forum with Baxtresser and Almarza](http://www.cmufluteforum.com). (Students do not have to audition for CMU to attend the class - it is open to students taking auditions at any school. Although I have to put in a plug for CMU, since I was a flute major there!! Jeanne is an amazing teacher and person!!)
