<p>I teach at a community college and get many graduates as well as visiting students from both Michigan and Michigan State in my classes (they take prereq courses at my cc to apply for second-degree programs, mostly nursing). I have to tell you that when I ask MSU students - "so, how did you like State"? - to a person, they all say "I LOVED it". I am almost sure I have never received this response from my Michigan students when I ask them the same question about Michigan. This is something I have observed over time - but might not mean anything. I recently mentioned this observation to my son who is currently applying to Michigan but has no plans to apply to MSU (that could change!).
BTW, I have no ax to grind - I didn't attend either school - I am pretty neutral when MSU plays UM :-)</p>
<p>Whenever anyone asks me about U of M, I just say it's tough. I like going here, I might love it if it were easier.</p>

<p>Micromom, I am sorry to say your observation is horribly incorrect. Michigan students tend to love their experience. I am sure there are some who don't like it, but by and large, the vast majority of students would give Michigan the highest possible rating. As an overall undergraduate experience, it is without a doubt the most complete university in the US. Academically, it is a top 10 university. Athletically, it has unbeatable traditions in Football and Hockey. The campus is lively, intellectual, cosmopolitan and spirited. The arts thrive. Ann Arbor is one of the most pleasant and enlightened communities. Globally, the university is recognized as a pillar of education. It just doesn't get any better and students generally fully appreciate that fact.</p>
<p>FWIW, I sure don't feel that way (that MSU is some poor substitute, that is). MSU and U-M have different things to offer and some people have good reasons for preferring MSU over U-M--reasons that have nothing to do with their ability (or inability) to get in to U-M.</p>
<p>U-M doesn't really have any reasons to take potshots at MSU. Well, except over sports. :)</p>

<p>My observations are what they are. When asked how they liked their school, my MSU students were always exuberant about their school and my Michigan students were not outwardly so. I never took from this that Michigan students did not love or even like their Michigan experience. It was merely an interesting observation. Maybe, my cc class is a magnet for happy alumni from MSU; the unhappy ones never end up being my students:-) </p>
<p>I have great respect for both schools. I have been in academia for some time now and so have had the chance to interact with superb alumni from both schools. </p>
<p>I am off now to learn the Michigan fight song---who knows, I might be singing it if my son gets in!</p>
<p>The only reason I dislike UM at times is the horrendous amounts of work. I love every other aspect of it.</p>

<p>As a former Michigander (not the now PC Michiganian, yeech) both schools are fine if you want to stay in Michigan. I think UM travels better and is respected more universally.</p>
<p>My experience has been ok so far (I'm sure it'll get better though). I do have one complaint though. At times when I meet certain people, I wonder...HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET INTO MICHIGAN????</p>
<p>You get a bit of that at every school Nick. I met students at Dartmouth and Stanford that really aren't the brightest. Obviously, at a school like Michigan, given its size and obligations, you are going to get a larger number and percentage of such students, but you get them everywhere.</p>
<p>I agree with that Alexandre. But you can't help but wonder how they got in, and some of my really smart friends didn't.</p>
<p>The difference... these guys are probably in-state and your friends are OOS. There are more OOS applicants for half of the seats.</p>
