I have an interview Thursday with the Dean of Admissions at Marquette. I've searched the forums to check out what people wore for their interviews, but it seemed that most of those interviews were alumni/student interviews and were slightly informal. Just how dressed up should I be considering it's an on-campus interview with the dean?

Maybe this is my California perspective showing, but I wouldn't expect to see a suit on a high school student in this context. Are you guys kidding?
I think khakis and a nice sweater for a boy and similar attire for a girl, with a dress or skirt optional. I would equate the dressiness to church attire.

I will go with khaki, nice shirt and tie. Suit optional depending on which region the college is in. Works the same for girls without the tie part.

My son interviewed with the Dean of Admissions at Wash U (on campus) and wore a button down shirt and khakis. It seemed absolutely appropriate -- a suit would have seemed out of place on campus where students are dressed very casually. It must have been fine, as he was admitted.

IMHO, a suit shows how much you care about the interview. The interviewer should see that you put in the effort to look nice to present yourself in the best possible way. In both of my interviews with prestigious schools, they loved the fact that I wore a coat and tie. Having said that, Khakis and a sweater would definitely not influence your decision at all.

having interviewed with a lot of higher ups in colleges, the other interviewees and I all wore suits. if theres other ppl interviewing, they will most likely wear a suit, making u look awkward

I'm the only one interviewing, but I think I'll just dress up anyways. I might as well, because as sup mentioned, he'll probably be wearing a suit.

I wonder if it'd be too odd to bring jeans/good walking shoes to change into after the interview? They're giving me a tour after the interview, and I really don't want to be rocking heels and dress pants on an icy, snowy day...

Yeah, I'd say go with khakis+collared dress shirt. Plaid looks really nice with khakis.

Btw, what is the interview for? An interview with the Dean of Admissions (aka GOD of a University) sounds like it is for something huge. The idea would make me nervous if i was the one being interviewed.

What about khakis, button down collar shirt, tie and blazer - remove the blazer for the tour. A navy blue blazer is a step down from a suit but still appropriate. Marquette is a Catholic school, right? You should err on the conservative (formal) side for a meeting with the Dean on campus. I think either a suit, or khakis with sweater/blazer would be appropriate.

Milwaukee is not a real formal town, and the weather has been awful lately. March and April can be a slushy mess. If you are expecting to tour afterwards, a pair of dark-colored dress pants and boots or something similar would be fine. Since it sounds like you're a girl, you have so many more options. A jacket is always a good idea, and a dressy blouse and some modest jewelry.

Khakis are a bad idea in cold, damp weather. They aren't warm, and they get stained from splashing.
