Attire for auditions--in Chicago (NOT unifieds)

Hi all! Reading on the website, this is what they say about attire

WHAT TO WEAR

Please wear “dance friendly” attire — comfortable clothing that allows the body to move freely (but no costumes) and shoes that you can dance in (sneakers, street shoes, character shoes or other type of dance shoes—please, no super high heels

This is really different from what my D typically wears for auditions. Any idea what people typically wear to NYU/Tisch auditions versus the other MT auditions. She has a nice dress, reasonable heels (look like character shoes). Is this ok?

ARGH!

I feel your pain and confusion since this one tripped us enough to require a shopping trip before the audition last year since my daughter no way wanted to show up in her usual audition dress and near character shoes and then change into dancewear based on the description (which was what we had packed.) My suggestion is wearing something completely “danceable” (Leggings/jeggings, and a top that essentially is a dance top) and then having a jacket/sweater that goes over all of it to dress it up. That is what my daughter did. She paired that with street boots and then changed just boots to dance shoes and took the jacket off for the dance audition. All of this was thrown together at the last second but looking around, it was the right read of what to do.

Good call to ask the question. Better than dealing with it in the moment. It confused us a bit too but I am reporting on what I saw at an on campus audition at NYU last year plus… my daughter is an MT freshman there now so hopefully that gives me some creds. :-)

halflokum!

Thanks so much. That really does help. The dance moves she added to her song can be done in her typical attire, but jsut wasn’t sure. I appreciate all of your insight and suggestions! I am sure she will be glad for any and all help!

I hope your D is wonderfully happy at NYU. I know my D is super excited to audition!

You are most welcome. If she ends up at NYU feel free to ask me any questions. I’ve been helped (and am still being helped) a great deal by people that I met in CC that had “boldly gone before me” as far as NYU is concerned. Break a leg to your daughter!

At my audition in Chicago all the girls changed in the bathroom for the dance audition. I had dance first and wore a leo and tights and then changed for my singing/acting audition. If I didn’t have any time I was just going to throw my clothes over my leotard, but they gave us time to change. I’m a first year a NYU now so I’d be happy to answer questions as well!

I have an audition in Chicago tomorrow, and the online guidelines for the MT audition are really vague… it talks about a “movement evaluation” which is the dance moves during the song. But it seems odd to me that they don’t have a specific dance portion. I plan on bringing my dance shoes and clothes and then a separate audition outfit, but could you tell me what real happens? I’m so confused.

@shannabeth7 that’s interesting and a change from previous years. Last year there was a specific dance section and the requirements (which I kept in a file) said: “In groups, applicants will be taught two short combinations to assess their relationship to movement and their responsiveness to choreography.” I know that there was both a ballet section and a contemporary section.

Clearly they are approaching things differently now. Do you have any friends that have already auditioned who you can ask for details? Unfortunately veterans from last year and before can’t help you here because of the change.

I auditioned for NYU Tisch in Atlanta in January, and I had also been somewhat confused by their movement requirements. I’m a dancer, so I choreographed some moderate level modern dance to one of my songs – no large leaps or turns or anything, just some full body movement – and they really loved it. Honestly, half of it was improv.

As it says on their website, they want you to show them a LOVE of movement, not just awkward step-touches and grapevines. If you can perform some killer step-touches, then by all means, use that to your advantage. Just find a song that really sparks your desire to move and then listen your instincts. They’re not looking for perfect technique, mostly for your ability to use the space you have and to convey emotion through movement.

If you want any more details about NYU’s audition process for 2013, just ask, I’m happy to help (:

Also, I just wore athletic shorts and a t-shirt to the audition, as did some others, and I didn’t feel too out of place (;

Good luck!

please help… daughter has nyu tisch drama audition and I am unsure about movement requirements?? she has been working with her coach on her two monologues but she hasn’t danced in a few years…

Is she straight acting or MT? My student is a current MT freshman there, and said the movement portion of the audition was a non-event. The primary focus was singing and acting, and then to take direction to change up portions of what was initially presented.

As for attire, my student wore interview attire that you could move in, and dance shoes. This seemed to be the standard attire for all auditions we went on. When there was a specific dance call, there was time to change into dance clothing. Most schools list attire expectations for dance portions on their websites. For all else, I recommend dress slacks, shirts and ties - at least for men, and knee length dresses for girls).

My D is a junior in MT/NSB at NYU Tisch and she was helping with the dance auditions yesterday. Specifically, she was responsible for teaching the candidates a short dance combination so I believe that is still a component of the auditions.
