Im a guy. its at the school, and the school says interviews are "important" to admissions decisions. how formal?

business attire: dress shirt and tie/sweater at least, suits always cause a person to look respectable and professional. also make sure that your shirt is tucked in, tie is straight and not loose.

Best of luck!

Collared shirt (polo, button down, etc) + slacks (or nice jeans) is what I would recommend. But as long as you look good you’re fine. No need to go overboard with suit + tie, especially if you’re meeting at a Starbucks or some place similar, unless wearing suits all the time is your style.

Also, this totally isn’t a common question. I just like linking to threads after my posts.

Agreed. Full business attire would be overboard. Collared shirt or shirt & tie and slacks or at most, shirt with jacket – no tie.

If it were at an alumni interviewer’s professional place of business (law office, banking center), then I’d go full suit.

if it’s at an alumni-interviewer’s place of business, then appropriate business dress. For a campus or other casual site, look at the school’s web site and view book photos to get an impression of what they think the ideal student look like.

ok thanks everyone. LOL @ absent.

and it shouldnt make any difference that the interviewer is a student and its at the school right?

(i just dont wanna wear a dress shirt and slacks at the school and look tacky, but im probably just being paranoid)

Definitely don’t go for full business attire. It isn’t “you,” and it’s just kind of cliche and boring.

Jeans/khakis and a polo can’t hurt.

What if full business attire is me? I hate jeans and t-shirts and I greatly prefer formal attire to casual. If I dress like myself will that be a negative because my sense of style, for interviews, might be too usual?
I’m a girl though, so business attire is a bit different for me. My favorite outfit is an oxford shirt with a tweed skirt, and that was what I was leaning towards for interviews, depending of course on the weather at the time.

Definitely a button down with slack or khakis at the least. I was lucky my Yale interviewer was a girl who wasn’t particularly dressed up, because my polo with chinos made me seem underdressed compared to the male interviewers.

I just got a suit that I love. Would it be alright to wear it? To make it slightly more casual, what if I didn’t wear the jacket and just wore the pants and the waistcoat? I have a feeling that might be a little too youthful of a look if the interviewer is an alumni.
