On Thursdays, I have to get to SMITH HALL 305 from FISHERIES CENTER 201 within 10 minutes. Is that possible? Will I need a bike or will running swiftly do?

If you ran you might be able to make it. problem is you’re going uphill so you may a little worn out afterwards. If you have a bike, i’d recommend using it.

ergh. I thought about getting a bike, but having to pay for a bike for just those Thursdays… I don’t think so… Are profs usually merciful is classes are on opposite sides of campus?? Thanks!

nobody will care if you leave the one class 5 min early or get to the other one 5 min late

Okay… you’re words put me at ease. You are a current UW student, aren’t you?

Hey pumpkins, I had the same question with my schedule as well! My friend said it takes him about 15 minutes to walk from the Red Square to the Fisheries Center… I changed my quiz sections so I have about an hour to walk there now
I’m not the type of person who wants to rush through classes, in case I want to talk to a TA after a quiz section.

Anyway, glad to hear I’m not the only one with a random quiz section in fisheries… -_-

yes

…

not entirely true about no one caring. If it’s in fisheries, I assume it’s a smaller class anyway, and it IS noticeable when you leave early out of a class of 30.

noticeable sure, but the teacher/t.a. isn’t going to bat an eye at it. they know students have other places to get to. this isn’t high school.

worst case, try to switch around your schedule but keep the same classes.
I had one of the first orientations and just revamped my entire schedule. No more trips to Fisheries for Autumn quarter! :D

spaceneedle, not true at all.
Some may not care at all, but you’re deceiving others if you generalize. LOTS of teachers/ta’s do care. Participation is a big chunk of many classes

i guess it ultimately depends on the teacher/class/class size
if the class is small it will be pretty noticeable, u never want to make a bad impression with your professor, at university u get very little interaction with them, so leaving class early and always showing up late might hurt you, i would avoid getting on their bad side (some professors might take it personally as a sign of disrespect)

participation points might apply to your grade, really depends on the teacher (aka: showing up on time is essential)

if u really can’t avoid this i would at least be upfront with your teacher, show them your schedule so they understand that you aren’t just lazy and don’t care enough to show up on time

from personal experience (mind you, this is my community college experience, not university), some more strict teachers would lock the door once class started (for labs especially since it is very important not to miss safety lectures), and you might get docked points/miss out on extra credit opportunities or just interrupt their lectures and annoy your teacher walking in late

@ pumpkins:
Yeah, it all depends on your class and professor. I was in Geology 101 last winter, the class size was roughly 766 students. And my professor said he didn’t care if one did things like sleep or leave early, because it’s ultimately your choice to stay and get a good grade. Frequently I’d see the same students on a daily basis leave early from the class, most likely to get to another class far across campus.

I read from somewhere on this UW forum category that you’re a direct admission CSE student. Congratulations man! I’m trying to get into the department next year (through regular admissions). From what I hear, it’s super competitive, so you’re super lucky.
Many many people get denied the first time around.

@XRaptor - haha thanks! Hopefully I’ll see you around in classes or even just in the CSE building!

“spaceneedle, not true at all.

-haven’t run across one yet.

@speedsolver:

Yeah, perhaps we’ll see each other. What is your class schedule Autumn 2010? We might have the same classes.

This fits in with my experiences both at CC and at the private university I went to years ago. Teachers with smaller classes in particular are apt to get annoyed by students who are late/leave early and, yes, I’ve known some professors who lock the door.

Talk to the teachers in question and show them your schedule . . . Hopefully they’ll be fine with you leaving a little early/late. But even so, be prepared to drop a class and replace it with something that fits in your schedule better, if it comes to that.

just to clarify, in a lecture of 700 people, even if the professor cared, not much they can do. Unless you actively go to office hours there is no way they know your name. In quiz sections? You’re in classes of 20-30. Some TA’s may not care. Many do care.
In any case, good luck figuring it all out!
