As an incoming Freshman boy... I am wondering what the dating scene is like here. I am sure Freshman guys get the shaft with the girls but how attractive and dateable (in other non-physical aspects) are the girls? Sorry if this thread is offensive; I don't mean it to be I am just curious so I know somewhat what to expect in advance.

You can see how attractive people at schools are by browsing facebook. LOL

Generally, duke culture is more of a hook-up culture than dating scene. However, some people manage to form meaningful relationships. The whole hook-up culture seems to be amplified if you are greek - at least from what I've seen.

Im down wiht the hookup culture if the girls are decent looking. I know this sounds shallow but I'm just going off what I'm being told. PS I can't get on facebook without a Duke email address.

If i get in, duke will be attractive...

no really.

haha i'm just kidding.

Don't settle for "decent", boy. Learn to have some standards.
lolz irony

I knew I liked you loller

You guys have to read the new Rolling Stone that just came out. One of the feature articles is about Duke. Normally I'm extremely skeptical of journalism in general (you have to accept that most of it is bull), but WOW. This article was scathing.

I think Faith Hill puts it best.

*Weve got bare foot ladies
and tricked out Mercedes
People getting crazy on the boulevard
Weve got classic colas
and ice cold coronas
and big pool parties in the back yard.

Youll see straw sombreros
and t-top cameros
Stereos blasting in the parking lot
Youll see rock hard bodies
and bikini hotties
and everybodys got it goin on,
and showing what they got.*

Although we do have the whole assortment, I would definitely say in general that Duke girls are pretty hot. They take of themselves and know how to dress very well. I mean, why would you ever go to Harvard when you could go to Duke?

Well, Duke isn't the best for a dating-relationship sort of culture because there aren't a lot of places walking-distance that are great to meet people for dating purposes - bookstores and coffee shops and low-key bars and clubs and such. It's not impossible, though - I've been in a relationship with a fantastic girl for several months now.

In response to how attractive they are, go look at facebook.

Question from an English learner: What is the difference between "dating" and "hook-up"?

Question from an English learner: What is the difference between "dating" and "hook-up"?

dating is a relationship, a hook up is a few hours...minutes...typically more focused on sex or making out

I'm sorry.. I should clarify. I am not an incoming freshman boy, I am talking hypothetically. Thus, I cannot access facebook.

uumm then why did you say so?

the hookup culture is undeniably present... and it can be frustrating at times for those that are looking for something more

i've heard it changes slightly after freshman year -- people settle down

back to the original question... i suppose..
-- duke is filled with attractive people, but we are by no means gorgeous :)

I've heard that, in general, the guys are more attractive than the girls...any current students want to comment on this?

As a guy, I definitely believe the opposite to be true.

As a girl, I agree with bluedevilmike. I think they strategically place every hot guy at Duke on the quad during prospective student tours, because there seemed to be a lot more when I visited than I feel like I see around now...

we're all just hiding :)
