raddad, my son will be attending uab this year. they have a wonderful program…science/technology honors which your son should look into. Dr Tucker is the person for that (very very nice)…if you call about a tour etc, contact Amelia Johnson and she will gladly set up a meeting with Dr Tucker for you. sci/tech includes a “scholarship” for phd. Son is in both sci/tech honors and chemistry scholars (which pays him each year as he will be a TA in chemistry) He is taking the forensic chemistry track. If you have questions about the campus etc feel free to pm me.

Want to second the rec to look at UAB while you’re in the area. If your child is not comfortable with Auburn or Bama, UAB may be a good fit for them. My son was dead set against attending school in the south, and UAB was our first visit. He loved the Birmingham area and the school itself. While he fell in love with Bama at Capstone Day and decided not to pursue UAB, if he did not find his fit at Bama or Auburn, UAB would have been a good option for him. He is a NMF, and all three offered him similar packages. He was initially offered the Blazer Elite, as an OOS, but if he had put UAB as his first choice, he would have received a similar package to the one he received at Bama and Auburn. Although son’s interest was biomedical engineering, we were surprised to find that UAB does have an excellent engineering department. As we had thought that Auburn was THE engineering school in the state of Alabama, we are still learning about the other schools. We just got back from Bama Bound, where we learned even more about Bama’s excellent engineering school. So, I would recommend looking at all three schools, Auburn, Bama and UAB, and see which school your child feels most comfortable at. Now, don’t get me wrong. They are not cookie cutter images of each other. Each has their own unique qualities and features. But if you’re looking for a good comparison in the same financial range, I would definitely apply to and/or visit all three.

Another plug for UAB. It made it all the way to the last cut for my D but then she started waffling on her lifelong path of a medically related career & decided to wait and put UAB on the short list for grad school.

Thank you all for your input. UAB sounds like a good option and we will definitely work it into our plans to visit while we are in AL. We will have to look into the science/ technology honors also, it seems to be something my son would be interested in. He attends our state math/science academy and really enjoys feeling a part of a group that is serious about education but one that also fits the ‘work hard, play hard’ mold.
