AU posts record enrollment, record ACT avg

This just from Wire Eagle on the Auburn.edu site:

Auburn University has achieved its highest enrollment in history this fall, and its freshman class boasts the top ACT score of any previous class, according to numbers released today by Auburn’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Enrollment is 25,469 among all student groups – undergraduates, graduate students and those enrolled in professional schools – up from 25,078 in fall 2010. Auburn has students from all 50 states and from 79 foreign countries.

New freshman enrollment consists of 4,202 students, just two fewer that last year’s record class. The class compiled an average score of 27.2 on the ACT college entrance exam, outpacing last year’s then-record of 26.9. They also earned an average high school grade point average of 3.81, up from 3.79 last year.

War Eagle!

They have updated the article to now include the number of National Merit Scholars and National Achievement Scholars.

National Merit Scholar enrollment is 181, up 47 from last year. National Achievement Scholar enrollment is 45, up 20 from last year. This year’s class of National Scholars represents 32 states, compared to 27 last year.

In 4 years the number of National Merit Scholars in the freshmen class has gone from 31 to 181.

I’m a proud dad of one of the 181!

WOW – this is an impressive increase. I can’t believe that number. Congrats to your student Bob. My D has been very satisfied with her decision to attend AU thus far. And, she just LOVES the football games!

I got an email today from the Honors College (solicitation for donation, of course!) They released some general statistics on this year’s freshman Honors College members:
Total freshman students = 940
female = 51%
male = 49% (this is an interesting flip from the overall university population, which has more males than females)
in-state = 47%
OOS = 53% (this ratio will change next year)
ACT avg. = 31.61 (I don’t know last year’s avg. – assuming it was similar)
GPA avg. = 4.24

Sharp group of kids!

Earlier in the spring, I had spoken with someone within the Honors College and she said they were restricting the number of entrants this year. She said it would be around 900 – I guess they ended up taking a few more than this. However, this number is down from last year, when they accepted over 1000 students. They were very concerned about having enough honors courses to accommodate all the students.
