Hi! This is my first post, so please be patient.

I am a high school senior who will likely attend AU in the fall. However, I come from an area of the country in which few students attend AU and as result will likely end up having AU pick my roommate for me. Does anyone know if AU housing has some sort of survey that students fill out to help the housing department pick roommates? Or is it random?

My recollection is that my D got to list dorms in order of preference, but didn’t complete any survey. I’d day 99 percent of the students are placed with random roommates by AU, so you won’t be in any different position from anyone else. If you have some special circumstance that needs to be taken into account (e.g., medical), you should contact the housing people to discuss it. You should also be aware that this past year there were a large number of “forced” triples (three people in a room designed for two); I think everyone had been “detripled” by the end of first semester–most sooner than that–though some liked their situation and decided to stay together.

AU does not have a roommate survey but they do ask a few questions like smoker/nonsmoker what area of campus and I do not remember what else. Our D has asthma and being around smokers is difficult for her so she did notify housing a dining that she had a major health concern. She was tripled and even though the placement was random she got along with her roommates well. She continues to live with one of her original roommates (this is her second year) and they are renting an apartment off campus together starting in May.

Our older D went to Smith and they do a long survey about preferences. Her original roommate and she were not a good match at all and they made a change in the first 6 weeks.
