Auburn Cost of Attendance

How much does everything cost at Auburn per year? In other words, what do tuition, board, and misc. expenses total up to at Auburn each year?

This year, the COA is about $43,000 for an OOS student

http://www.auburn.edu/admissions/files/costofattendance.pdf

I saw that you are a PS. Your department may also offer a scholarship that stacks on the PS money. My son stacked scholarships and we paid about $400 for the first quarter and he is out of state. If you are interested in AU - don’t give up until all the scholarships are given out. That $400 covered the difference in room, fees, tuition that his scholarships didn’t cover. Go and meet the people in your chosen field.

I plan to apply as undecided … so which departments should I seek out?

Pardon my ignorance… but what is a PS?

Presidential Scholar…

Auburn gives about a 3/5 tuition scholarship to OOS students with the PS…$15k towards an OOS tuition cost of about $25k. COA is about $43k.

I don’t know if this student is also a NMSF. Don’t think s/he’s indicated such.

I am a NMSF, and I plan to apply as undecided. Where does that get me?

offtoschool…My son met with Auburn recruiting rep today at his HS…last week with Texas A&M. A&M definitely spelled the process out much clearer regarding the potential for add’l scholarships on top of NMSF/NMF, and the timing of everything. We are not getting much out of Auburn, granted they don’t make their first round of acceptances until October 15th. The difference in OOS NMSF/NMF scholarship at Auburn and what A&M offers could be the decisive factor on where my son chooses. What is your experience with the timing of when Auburn supplied you a comprehensive financial aid package? A&M basically told us we would have it in hand by mid to late February.

Also, curious if your son was NMSF/NMF and utilized the 4 years of free room as part of the scholarship? Just wondering if kids really want to/or actually live on campus for four years.

^^^

If you’re talking about Auburn and housing, the NMFs aren’t usually living on campus after the first year. They use the allowance for off campus apartment living. AU doesn’t have enough on-campus housing for NMFs to be on campus all 4 years.

Actually since the “housing allowance” is less than the remaining 2/5th of the tuition costs, I wonder if the “housing scholarship” just gets used towards the $10k tuition gap.

As the mom of an OOS Auburn freshman who is a NMF I can share this information about our experience. Last year Auburn did change their NMF scholarship package for OOS to include $15,000/yr. tuition, $2,000 stipend, $2600/semester housing allowance, $2500 study abroad after sophomore year, and a $1000 one-time technology allowance for freshman year. They also require a $995 meal package for students living on campus which is not covered and neither are books.

Early application acceptance letters are rec’d in Oct. and you must be admitted by Dec. 1 to be eligible for any other school sponsored scholarships. Because OOS NMF is competitive, we were not notified until April that our son was confirmed by AU as a NM Scholar. They said they wait to see how many in-state NMF and NMSF will be attending before making their decision, but the earlier you choose AU as your first choice the better your chances. Because he was waiting to be selected he did not pay the dorm deposit so he did not get his first choice on dorm but it has worked out well anyway. The dorm scholarship covers their mid-level dorms so if you live on the Hill you end up with an extra $350/semester in your account or if you live in the Village you will owe more than the $2600 covers. They do guarantee housing on campus for NMF, just not which housing you will be assigned. You are invited to join the honors college and can then live in an honors dorm and that is a good thing, but AU charges $250/semester for honors college for freshman. Also, the dorm scholarship can only be used for on-campus housing so no moving off campus after your freshman year and expecting to get that money to cover your housing.

With a few other outside scholarships we ended up with a tuition bill of $1805 for this semester. Cheaper than GA Tech would have been even with the HOPE. Now, he has to keep a 3.0 to keep the scholarship for future years.

Hi AUbrassmom^

So even if you name them as 1st choice early on they do not tell you until April? Do you remember what date in April you were notified? And do they let you know you are in the running or do they say all NMF are being considered.

I guess if you name them early on as first choice with the intent to change your first choice if necessary it would not look good to other OOS universities that are also competitive.

My plan was to save the schools that would be the most expensive to visit because of flights involved until after they made an offer. With these changes I’m sure S will have made his decision already of which college to attend.

Thanks for sharing this information.

Interesting stuff AUbrassmom…would definitely be interested in hearing more about the timing of when you were notified…especially since other schools prefer notification by March 1st. Auburn may be “eliminating” itself from consideration due to the nature of how they notify OOS NMF. My son has two very strong contenders with very generous NMF packages, which are guaranteed…that may be the route to go. Would also be interested in hearing more about other Auburn scholarships you received and stacked on. I will say other than being “'cute” the Auburn recruiter in our area is not nearly as enthusiastic as the A&M recruiter is about having my potential NMF son at their school.

AU brass…

Is Auburn now guaranteeing on campus housing for all four years for NMFs? If so, that hasn’t always been the case. There was a time when only frosh year had a guarantee for housing for NMFs.

I would encourage you all to look at Oklahoma’s scholarship package as well. When we were deciding where to go we were looking at all the big twelve schools, Auburn and Alabama, but went with OU. They have a very competitive scholarship package that’s guaranteed to any NMF - so we didn’t have to worry about deadlines and caps. But in the end, we decided on it because the scholarship was guaranteed for five years and could be used for grad school. I know you guys didn’t mention them, but it’s worth a look.

vryproudmom,

The letter from Auburn notifying S that he was chosen as a NMF and would recieve the National Scholar’s Presidential Scholarship is actually dated March 5th so my bad on the April date. They never told us in writing that he was being considered, but when we talked with someone in the scholarship office while on a campus visit we were told that since OOS is now competitive at Auburn, it would be beneficial to declare Auburn as his number one choice sooner rather than waiting. He was also considering Alabama because their overall package was more comprehensive and UA also sent certificates awarding S the NMF package even though he never named them as a first choice school. He had applied and been accepted and he made a campus visit in the fall and capstone scholars day in January (I think).

bkcurnutt,

Checked the actual letter at home and S was notified on March 5 of being chosen as NMF by Auburn. After my conversations with the scholarship office, I got the impression that the economy is why the changes to their offerings to OOS and no longer guaranting the scholarship. I’m sure that did eliminate some from considering AU. I agree with your assessment about other schools definitely “courting” my S more with offers, letters, hand-written notes, etc. and have shared that with Auburn (told them as an alum I was disappointed in their recruitment efforts for academic scholars as compared to others). Ultimately, AU’s engineering school reputation, proximity to home, and his exposure to the AU campus growing up led to son’s final decision.

S recieved one engineering scholarship from AU and several other outside scholarships that he found and applied for on Fastweb.

m2ck,

Based on what we were told and sent in the housing packet, the fresh. year is only time space is an issue and NMF are guaranteed space. After that, student would renew campus housing reservation from year to year before future fresh. are assigned space. I suppose if they missed the reservation window, they could loose their on-campus housing but the scholarship would still not pay for off-campus arrangements. The guidelines for the Presidential Scholarship specifically states “the (housing) allowance is not available if the student is unable to secure on-campus housing or opts to reside off-campus.”

Thank you for all the advice you provide on this site. Your posts were most helpful during our journey from PSAT to NMF and I have referred so many people to this site as a result.

Thank you for the kind words and thanks for the scholarship update.
