Auburn Engineering or UT Austin Engineering

Help please! I have a full ride at auburn thanks to the national hispanic scholar finalist scholarship. But i have been accepted to UT austin cockrell school of engineering (petroleum engineering). Which should I attend? I am primarily concerned with job placement. Also I am if I go to Auburn I would switch to chemical engineering. Any opinions would be appreciated.

If you get a full ride at UTA go there. Otherwise go to Auburn. Very good school and no cost. You can’t beat that.

I’ve heard petroleum engineering is a pretty non-existent field.

Have you visited either school? If not, have you looked at the online virtual tours?

Take the money! Auburn has a very good engineering school.

BTW…wil Texas A&M offer you a full-ride, too?

IF UT-Austin also offered a full-ride then I’d go there. However, if they don’t offer even a half scholarship for your tuition/room&board then I’d go to Auburn. I feel kind of biased since I really like UT-Austin for academics and the environment. However, if finances also matter then go to Auburn since it’s also a great school and you have a full-ride.

Must not have talked to anyone in the oil business. It the engineers who have the best opportunities throughout the world.

Auburn is solid in engineering. A full ride? I would take that. I love UT but save your money if possible. You’ll be better off financially when you graduate.

When I worked for Boeing and Northrop Grumman in California, there were Auburn Engineering grads at both places, so don’t think that you’d be hurt job-wise.

I think my only problem with Auburn is that I would have to do chemical engineering and I really really want to become a petroleum engineer. I want to be a drilling engineer and work on the rigs… more of a “hands on” engineer. Money really isn’t a problem because my parents decided to do save up since I was born. I just have a serious problem skipping UT Austin #1 or #2 Petroleum program for Auburn’s engineering which is not really ranked that high (chemical engineering program just says “top 100”)

Full ride at Auburn. IMHO, petroleum engineering is quite limiting career-wise - and you never know what the oil markets will look like in 4-5 years when you graduate. Chemical engineering will get you into many more fields.

P.S. I got interviews with Schlumberger for a drilling engineer…this as a ChemE from Berkeley…Check with Auburn’s career center to see what companies actively recruit on campus…I’d be surprised if it’s much different from UT-Austin’s.

If you really want to be a petroleum engineer have you checked out U Tulsa?

Since many Fortune 500 companies and Fortune 1000 industries are in Cummings Research Park, Auburn grads are heavily recruited.

My H hired an Auburn freshly-minted grad last May and started him at $60k.
