Trying to decide between UT Austin engineering vs. Auburn. Being a military kid I’ve never lived in one place very long and my familiarity with the Central Alabama area is very attractive. However, I know that UT is ranked higher on engineering lists. My test scores and gpa are good enough to get me quite a bit of scholarship money from Auburn (not quite as much from UT). Any input on the comparison between the two?
Just getting into UT is tough these days. UT is raked much higher but that doesn’t seem to make as big a difference as the higher ranked schools like to claim. However, these are two very different environments. I’m from Texas and used to go to UT Austin to party (back in the 70s) - Auburn is not a party school. They do have their share of parties but there seems to be more self discipline around the campus. Smart, hard working, well mannered friendly kids.
Already visited both yet? Both schools are fully ABET accredited programs so either will give you a good education. Sit in on a class or two, talk to random people, wander campus and find your best fit. UT is better ranked in most programs except for wireless but some significant differences to weigh in campus size, average class sizes, campus life, food, dorms, Austin vs Auburn, total cost, co-op, Honors College, friendliness. S1 is freshman MechE at Auburn and loves it.
Thanks for all the advice. I have in fact toured both schools and I definitely felt more comfortable at Auburn. However, the difference between Auburn and Austin seems rather large in what opportunities they can provide after college.
Like what ?
@chicknfriedmatt Has either offered your financial aid? We are in a similar dilemma. Full tuition scholarship from Auburn or pay out of pocket for Purdue. I think that we will visit Auburn and hope that my son likes it-- lol.
