Auburn Engineering

I’m interested in opinion/experience with Auburn engineering.

Great, but competitive program with some awesome scholarship opportunities for freshmen!

Daughter accepted to GA Tech and Auburn. I know the rep of Tech, but Auburn’s engireering has good rep too. Kids seem happier on Auburns campus. Are the engineering students also happy? What do you see as pro/con of Auburn vs. Georgia Tech? Cost would be about the same.

Engineering is a tough program at AU, but generally, there’s probably a little less pressure at AU than Tech. From our experience at GA Tech, the AU campus is more laid-back, more accessible, and friendlier. I think it’s fairly easy to access your prof at AU as well. I can’t say enough good things about the honors courses at AU – especially for frosh and soph. students. Smaller class size and so much easier to interact with instructor.

My son also had to choose between GA Tech and Auburn. Ga Tech is obviously a prestigious engineering program. We know many people there - some absolutely love it and others are miserable. All of them say it is a very competitive, often cut throat environment.

After much deliberation my son chose Auburn. He loved the beautiful , laid back campus and the opportunities offered him as an Honors Scholar. Auburn advisors made my son feel very valued. He has both an Engineering advisor and an Honors college advisor and both have offered excellent assistance. Auburn is not an easy school - my son’s engineering classes have been difficult, but he has already learned so much.

Recently my son also met with the Engineering Co-op advisors who are helping him prepare his coop application. GA Tech offers excellent engineering co-ops, but Auburn has many opportunities for their engineering students as well. Large employers such as Delta, Georgia Power, Nasa, Verizon Wireless and Honda motors come to Auburn and select engineering students for their coop program. My son’s scholarship also came with a stipend to Study Abroad. Again, both the Honors College and the Engineering dept provide opportunities to study around the world.

War Eagle and good luck with your decision.

Count me in as another whose son had to choose between Auburn and Ga Tech. He preferred the family environment that Auburn offered, and it helped that AU gave him a scholarship and Honors College spot. While he liked Ga Tech, he just didn’t want to go to college in an urban environment.

At Ga Tech, when we toured, none of the other students paid any attention to us except for the guy who said “this place sucks” as we passed him. Contrast that to Auburn, where we were warmly greeted by everyone we came across. My son was a football recruit, and in addition to the general tour, we got a wonderful tour of the athletic facilities by a Tiger Host and Tigerette. While football didn’t pan out due to an injury (would have been too demanding being in Engineering and playing football, so it’s just as well), it compelled him to try out for Tiger Hosts himself. I’m proud that he is going on his second year as a Tiger Host.

Thank you all for responding. It is good to hear that the responsiveness of the staff continues after you enroll. We wait for his decision… :)

My son too chose Auburn over Ga Tech. Apart from Auburn being better financially it has a very well establish Engineering reputation. His goal is to finish his BS in Chem Eng with a Biomedical Engineerig specialization. After that he will be looking at GA Tech for his graduate studies.

Looks like Auburn will offer a better undergraduate experience than GA Tech. He is very happy of his decision and enjoying Auburn very much and still get challenged significally. Best of both worlds.

Lapagan, that’s so interesting! I am also planning to major in CHEN with a specialization in biomedical engineering (entering freshman)! How exciting and ironic. I would love to have classes with someone specializing in the same area as me (freshman year).

RMSniper, congratulations. Great choice. My son is a freshman now and staying at the honors dorms. If you want I can connect you with him so talk and he can share some of his experiences.

He is staying in campus again next year so I’m sure toucan connect.

That would be great if you could. I would value the information greatly!

Add my son to the men who have chosen Auburn. We are looking forward to it!
