Auburn or Alabama

Help!!!

Nursing major, will prolly get accepted to both and was wondering the differences and which has the better town, better greek life, better sports.

What kind of help do you need as far as finances go, and are you NMF likely?

excuse me for sounding like an idiot but what dodes nmf likely mean? nat’l merit finalist likely? my act is a 28 hoping for a 30 in october sooooooooooooo nmf likely prolly not would be my quess. My gpa is 4.13 weighted. Lots of ap’s , ib and honors courses.

I was asking for help as to what are the opinions when comparing the schools. Their campus’, kids, town and if anyone happens to know…the nursing program.

“NMF” = National Merit Finalist – means you took the PSAT as a junior and scored sufficiently high enough in your particular state to become a National Merit Semifinalist; a NMSF then continues on in the competition by submitting to NMSC their HS transcripts, SAT score, and an essay. If you are then chosen as a NMF, you can qualify for merit scholarships at universities who sponsor them. AU is a sponsor. As a junior, you should be aware of the PSAT – you will most likely be taking it in October.
UA is also a NM scholarship sponsor school, and offers generous scholarships to winners. If you get your ACT up to a 30, you can get more scholarship money. Check out the Scholarship pages on both school’s websites.

AU and UA have different types of campuses and offer different first impressions. You need to visit both to see which one is a better fit for you. Very generally, AU is more laid-back than UA.

Hi All. My S is interested in Business or possibly pre-law. Trying to wrap up his applications by the end of the month. We are from the Northeast. He seems to be focusing in on big schools. Looking for solid academics, but balanced social life, huge football and basketball fan. Wondering which has a better reputation for business and pre-law, Auburn or Bama? I have seen the USNWR rankings…looking for perceptions from students, graduates, family and alum in terms of hiring rates and admittance into graduate or law schools. Also, how is the social scene on weekends AFTER football is over, do many students head home, or is campus still very active? Would love insight from any current Northeast students or recent grads on being an OOS student at either school too! Thanks!

Nova 88,

I am a business major at Auburn and we have some great programs. I am in the International Business program and plan on going to Law School after undergrad. I’m from Georgia, but I have plenty of friends from as far north as Wisconsin, and a few from California. There is always something going on in Auburn in the Fall, but of course there are weekend people go home or head to Atlanta to shop, sporting events, concerts, etc.

As far a job placement, Auburn does a great job in matching students with employers and internships. I will be doing an internship with a German Airline (Aviation Minor) this summer, and Auburn truly has helped me get the internship.

Feel free to message me with any other questions. And War Eagle!

WarAJEagle.

Thanks for your reply. My S is very interested in internships, so it’s great to hear from a current student regarding Auburn’s placement success. Does anyone intern during the school year, or just mainly over the summer? Do many business majors study abroad? Thanks again, its awesome to have some inside perspective :o)

Auburn has a great business school, for both undergraduate and grad programs. It’s well-ranked (42) on the U.S. News Best Colleges undergrad business school rankings (27th among public institutions.) I’m glad a student from the business school offered the OP some feedback!

Nova 88,

From what I know, some students do choose to intern during the school year, but the majority prefer the summer for obvious reasons. And yes, there are TONS of study abroad options. Your best bet for information on study abroad is at the following link: [College of Business | International Programs](<a href=“Harbert College of Business”>Harbert College of Business)

The best way to experience Auburn is to come down and tour the campus (if you haven’t already.) It will give you a true feel of the Auburn family and the culture around Auburn. It really is a special place.

My D and I are heading to Auburn and UA this week for tours. We are coming from the east so any advice would be greatly appreciated. She has several meetings set up at UA but only a campus tour at Auburn. Input please…from dining to driving…I need it all (we are flying into ATL). Thanks in advance!

Mommyflyer, try to see if you can meet with the department your D is interested in. There are wide variations in colleges at all schools. My D is a freshman business major; when we visited last year, she had specific questions about the COB. Both the associate dean and a student from the COB were so informative, it clinched her decision. (The campus tour is great too)

When you come, spend time walking down college avenue–there are plenty of dining choices–we like Mellow Mushroom on College or Mamma Goldberg’s on the west side of campus or the Oyster Bar closer to the Highway.

There are plenty of on-campus options and it might be fun to have lunch at one of them to see the kind of students at AU. The most amazing thing about AU students is they are so well-groomed even in shorts and t-shirts! Very little grunge or goth!

Do NOT stay at the Days Inn across from Campus unless you absolutely have to. It is filthy. We wore white socks while in the room at all times and they were black after a few hours from the dirt in the carpet

Yes, this campus is impeccably clean, and well-maintained. AU’s campus is smaller than UA’s, but still be prepared to walk a lot during your tour(s). As for a campus lunch break, Au Bon Pain in the student center has great sandwiches and salads. Chef’s Table (also in student center) offers a wider menu selection (including vegetarian meals) and is open for lunch. There’s also a Chick-fil-A and a Starbucks (of course!).

The Hampton Inn out on College by the interstate is just fine – friendly, clean with great bedding. The Auburn Hotel is by far the closest lodging and is very nice, (can’t go wrong here) just more expensive than most other choices. As mentioned by abtsmom, Mellow Mushroom is great for pizza, salads, etc. If you’re in the mood to sit down for more a eclectic meal, Zazu’s or Hamilton’s (both very close to campus on Magnolia) are great, as is the Amsterdam Cafe on Gay St. (one block east of College St.)

It may be helpful to sit in on a lecture, if possible. Is your student interested in the Honors College? My D loves all her honors courses (and is adding more next semester) I would see if you can attend an honors course. The staff over at the Honors College offices is a very friendly bunch. Good luck, safe travels, and War Eagle!

The trip from the Atlanta airport is extemely easy. Just get on Interstate 85 south and it will bring you all the way into Auburn. The airport is on the west side of Atlanta, so it’s very easy to get on #85. It will take you about an hour and forty minutes to get to Auburn. We’ve always stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Nothing fancy, but it is reasonably priced and they do have a pool and a whirlpool.
There are many good eating places, but some of our favorites are: Mama G’s, Niffer’s, McAlisters, Loco’s, and Little Italy’s. None of these are fancy, but the food is good and inexpensive. For frozen yogurt, you have to go to Chill which is very close to campus, next door to McDonalds.

Chill = very tasty!

Thank you to everyone who passed along advice regarding our UA and Auburn trips. We had a great time and fell in love with both schools. Now comes the hard part…making the decision between the two schools. Both had great pros …and really no cons!

Good luck with your decision – we were in your shoes last year, it’s not easy! I’m sure you can’t go wrong with either university.
