We are from Florida and considering and Auburn and Alabama because of the scholarships offered to National Merit Finalist. I am quite aware of what it takes to be a National Merit Finalist. Point is, amount of National Merit Finalist in Alabama becomes less impressive when they are bought and the avergage Alabama student is mediocre.

Avg Alabama student is no different than the avg Auburn student;only difference between two schools is where the national merit finalists are: Alabama. In addition, Alabama is not "buying" just Alabama resident merit finalists--they are coming from across the country. Do your homework!

My major is apparel Merchandising & design. Does anyone know if Alabama or Auburn is better for this major??

Not even close! WDE

Auburn's honors program is smaller than Bama's thumbs up

I'm from Delaware and I feel like Auburn has a better rep up there than AL. I feel like many feel Alabama is a joke. I mean, their average SAT is a 990. Like come on now. That's below the national average.

I believe the 25th to 75th percentile band for Bama's SAT is 990 to 1240, which puts the average around 1120. And these numbers are probably for class of 2007.

On the App (I filled out the app but decided not to apply) it says if a student has a 990 SAT and a 21 ACT, they would be accepted into the University of Alabama.

That is low, but I think they said 3.0 student and 990 SAT would be successful at UA, not necessarily accepted.

To us in GA, Bama is like DeVry.

"What do you do to get in?
Open the door!"

Well, that's not the same thing as the average SAT score for entering freshman.

rsxweeeee

dont talk to much. maybe you should apply to Alabama, its a good school and you were REJECTED by FLORIDA.

I did apply, and I got in.
and what does being rejected by UF have to do with anything? That's a good school with high admissions standards.

I'm just telling it like it is. I told my Mass Communications teacher that I applied to Bama, he asked me if I had a pulse, I told him yes, then he said I'll get in. That what we think of Bama here.

Point is, you are being insulting and aren't so smart that you should look down on others.

That's what everyone thinks of Bama, even in Alabama (except the people who actually end up going there, and the football fans)

AUlostchick ("that's what everyone thinks of Bama") and rsx ("I'm just telling it like it is") -- I refer you back to my post #10. It appears U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger's, Princeton Review, the StudentReviews website, Forbes, etc. feel otherwise. But, this is the Auburn forum, so have at it.

Razordad - Why are you so interested in Alabama and why are you on the Auburn forum? Sounds like a troll to me.
You can quote all of the ratings that you wish, but the fact remains that Alabama's stats are skewed due to their pursuit of NMS and because of their enormous endowment. Yes, the endowment factors into most of the formula's. Also, it is also a known fact that college admissions information can be manipulated to get a higher ranking. You should know this since you seem so familiar with all of the rankings. Again, I smell troll.

Also, Auburn does not have a 'certain flavor' because it has many kids from the Atlanta area! That is just absurd seeing as how more kids from this area seem to go to Alabama than to Auburn! Again, I smell a UA troll.

How aggravating that schools feel the need to send trolls onto this website in order to change the impression that many people have of their school. If that is the game you want to play then stay on the Alabama page.

You can say or quote all the stats that you want but the truth doesn't change: Bama does not have a great reputation in terms of selectivity. In fact it is seen as the easiest, large university to get into in this area. Is that a problem? It is a great university and people can get a great education there but you can't change the fact that as far as admissions go, more mediocre students get into Bama than Auburn.

Bama is a beautiful campus and a good school. Auburn, does not have near the endowment that Bama has and is not aggressively pursuing NMS. However, Auburn is viewed as the tougher of the two schools to get into. But really, who cares because if you get in to either school and screw up you will not get a good education. Both schools are what you make of them once you are in. The biggest difference that I can see is that Auburn is family, 'Bama is just a big impersonal university. I don't know the how's or the why's, but Auburn has cultivated an atmosphere that is like being a part of a big family. Bama, not so much.

I don't think he's trolling, the OP was asking for AU vs. UA, so if you aren't expecting someone to post on UA's behalf, how does that help the OP? He's providing stats and things from U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger's, Princeton Review, etc...while everyone else is giving their own opinions with their own agendas.

If by "troll" you mean some sort of a "plant" by the University of Alabama to tout Bama over other schools, I can assure you that is not the case. My interest in Bama, Auburn and other large, southeastern schools, stems from my oldest son being a high school senior and actively investigating and applying to various colleges in the southeast. I stand by my post, which is largely a factual portrayal of various rankings and events. And the original (and dated) post poses the question of which is the better school (not merely the most selective), so I thought some widely followed rankings on the subject might be relevant, to balance out the "enthusiasm" of a couple of Auburn students. You might not like the rankings, or give them much credence (which is fine), but no need to "shoot (or insult) the messenger." Just giving some data points that may be somewhat more "objective" for those who might be interested.

well i just want to say alabamas acceptance rate is lower because they have less qualified people who apply, i live in ga and most ppl go to uga at my school and its very tough to get in, and every single person i know applied to bama as a back up and every single person i know got in! people consider it a party school, i would say the only ppl who go there who actually have good grades and care about more than greek life and partying are people whose families have gone there and have grown up loving it.. besides that it is considered by all other states on the same par as ole miss.. a party school and i know people who go there and everyone says if you arent greek you dont have a social life.. but idk i mean i applied to auburn and got in but i also know some ppl who got into auburn with pretty low gpas and test scores so while i do think its a little better and tougher than bama it still isnt that great.. i was deciding between clemson and auburn and decided on clemson ultimately because i feel it is a better school academically. my 2 cents =]
