Auburn students and parents

OK… my S was just offered a scholarship at Auburn. He is a Hispanic Scholar and they offered a great package… fully paid. He really wants to study Aerospace Engineering and although they have a program, it isn’t highly ranked. He would like to attend Purdue, Georgia Tech, or Stanford but Auburn was his safety school and attending each of those Univerities would be at a substantial cost.

Q: How satisfied are you with your/your child’s decision to attend Auburn? What type of recommendation could you give concerning classes, honors program, school atmosphere, culture, housing, etc… Any help or response would be greatly appreciated.

OK-I’m ticked. I spent almost an hour writing a long reply. When I went to post it, CC timed me out and the message was gone. Thus, you will get the Ciff Notes version.
Our daughter is a freshman at Auburn, undecided major, but in the College of Science and Mathematics.
Decision to Attend Auburn: Extremely satisfied. She absolutely loves it there.
Honor’s program: I believe you need something like 18 honor’s credits to graduate with honors. She took honors calculus the first semester and had around 30 kids in the class.
School atmoshpere: Auburn has a fairly large enrollment with a small campus feel to it. The campus is not as spread out as other schools it’s size. The school spirit is amazing. During the fall, the football games are simply incredible. The town itself is also a college town as opposed to a school within a large city. I love that about Auburn, but others like the city life.
Culture: We were simply amazed at the Southern Hospitality. We visted many many different colleges. The people at Auburn University, and in the town of Auburn were the friendliest, most helpful, and had the best manners of anywere we visited. My daughter has also commented about how polite the boys are down there. When she goes out with friends, they open her car door, open the door of the restaurant, then park the car. People are always talking about the “Auburn Family” there, and it is not a gimmick. The place just has a special feel to it.
Housing: Our daughter lives in the Village. It was built in 2009, and they are suite style dorms. There are four kids to a suite and each one has their own bedroom. They also have a nice living area and a kitchen. It is the best freshman housing of any college I’ve seen, but you do need to get your deposit in early to live there. Auburn also has more traditional dorms with two kids to a room.
In a nutshell, we couldn’t be more pleased with Auburn, and love everything about it. Our daughter also had options to attend more prestigious schools, but at a cost. It will be so nice for her to graduate debt free. That is a decision you’ll have to make. I do know Auburn has raised it’s academics a lot in the last few years. Their average ACT score has risen from something like 24 to almost 27 in eight years. Last year they had a record number of Presidential Scholars and NMF’s attend there. We visited Auburn in February for Presidential Scholar’s Day, and I thought it was a fantastic experience. Their War Eagle orientation days in the summer for both students and parents are also very informative and first class. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

Ditto to everything Mustang2000 said. My daughter loves it there and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else!

Thank both of you for taking the time to reply. So far, I’ve heard nothing but glowing praise for the Auburn family. We are planning a visit on the 21st of February and I am really leaning to the “debt free” approach at this point. Thanks again and take care.

Mustang2000 - I HATE that! I have learned to highlight all my text and copy before I submit. If I have timed out, I can log back in paste the original post and submit. I learned the hard way…many times.

Thanks for your responses Mustang & proudmom. They are much appreciated!!

Thanks, I did do this the second time I posted as I learned the hard way. My problem is remembering to highlight before I post!

as a current freshman in the honors program, I can not rave enough about Auburn. I love the atmosphere, the people, the academics, and everything else you can think of. I’m currently a bit brain dead and I’m sure I’m not coming off as coherently as I’d like, haha, but if you have ANY questions feel free to PM me. Auburn really caters to its honors/scholarship students, and has made my first semester experience fabulous.

Can anyone comment on TALONS Day at Auburn? D was invited and I’m hoping to coordinate Talons visit w/ UA’s Capstone Scholars day in mid-Jan. Anyone else who has attended either or both of these events- please comment. Thanks

Both TALONS Day and Presidential Scholars Day serve to make the attendees realize that they are and will be special to Auburn.

I am debating between Auburn and Alabama for next year, and one of my main concerns is housing. I really want to be in a suite style dorm, and I know that won’t be any problem at Bama… I will do the honors program at either college I attend, but at Auburn if I am an honors student will I be guaranteed on campus housing or to be in The Village? I know that they are lacking on campus housing so I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge!

I definitely meant to post a completely new thread, sorry about that.

This is from the Auburn website. The Village is very difficult to get into. You would probably have to get your deposit sent in soon.
Members of the Honors College (including Presidential Scholars) are not automatically placed in an Honors Hall. They must be guaranteed on-campus housing and request placement in an Honors Hall. While we cannot guarantee placement in an Honors Hall, we are usually able to accommodate the majority of requests. Only Honors College students may live in the Honors Halls: therefore, Honors students who request roommates who are not members of the Honors College will not be considered for placement in an Honors hall. Please note that National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Scholars, and National Hispanic Scholars are guaranteed housing so long as they apply for housing by May 10, 2011. The guarantee is for a bed only, not a specific type of housing.
