Audition and Interview Advice

hey everyone! i want to create a big thread where people can share advice for auditions, especially with new zoom auditions. feel free to contribute any tips, especially people who’ve been through the college audition cycle before! i want to start with a few questions, but any advice is welcome. also, i checked for a similar thread before i made this, but feel free to move it if you think it belongs somewhere else.

i) any tips for the interview? did they ask you any questions about the program or was it more a conversation about yourself? what is the conversation like?

ii) how many songs did you prepare for your audition? the school says you can prepare “any other performance ready musical theatre or pop repertoire” so how many songs do you think is a good amount to have?

iii) the school asks you to prepare 32 bar cuts, as well as the full version of the song, but is known to have done 16 bar cuts in previous years. should you have a 16 bar cut as well just in case?

iv) any general tips for zoom, like maximizing sound quality, setup spaces, what to do right away when you enter the call, etc.

thank you so much !

For tech considerations- a ring light obviously but perhaps not so obvious, we found an Ethernet cable really helpful. My daughter would use the cable and not Wi-Fi to try to avoid internet glitching.

I remember seeing a great set up last year. The schools almost always ask what is it about our program that you like. When you’re auditioning for 20+ programs sometimes it’s hard to remember, in the moment when your adrenaline is high. He had a dry erase board positioned right behind the computer and would write on it before the audition some key points about that particular program that he liked. I thought that was genius and wished we had thought of that before the end of auditions!
