Audition Day Process?

Hi everyone,
What are all the parts of an audition day? I know obviously that you need to play your repertoire in front of a jury, but what else?

I've heard things like written test on basic musicianship skills, in-person evaluation of musical skills, test on ear training, music theory test. I don't really understand what the first two mean. What else is there? What are all the possible things I need to prepare for?

Thanks

It totally depends on the school - maybe others can chime in with specific recent experiences. At some places, there’s a reception, at others a general meeting, or a meeting for parents, some have a theory test, some have ear training evaluations, some offer get-togethers within a department or info sessions with a faculty for, say, strings or voice. Some have tables with snacks, some have tours, some reserve you practice room time while others prefer the survival-of-the-fittest, others just have you play and leave. To some extent, the structure of the audition day can give you a sense of the “culture” of the school.

HChan98, if you can say which instrument and which schools you are interested in, people may be able to give you specifics.

Oh I’m really sorry: I play piano. There are a lot of schools I’m interested in (still a sophomore, so haven’t really narrowed the list down): Eastman, rice, oberlin, Juilliard, Peabody are a few.

Since you’re still a few years away from the process, why don’t you hang around here for a while and read what’s being posted and you’ll learn from what’s being written? There will be posts about audition days and you can also make use of the “search” feature since we’ve covered that pretty thoroughly in the past.
