Audition emails

Ohh! Vocals!

My only advice beyond “sing well” is show them who you are and aspire to be as an artist (do I sound like an AI judge?). And enjoy yourself.

If you have anything else to show them that tells your “story,” do so (an instrument you play well or anything you’ve written, even though you’re not a songwriting major), bring it you with and see if they’d like you to show them. Try to stand out as an individual. Success in contemporary music is about so much more than mere talent these days, and I personally believe they take this into account. (I’ve had numerous conversations with Chris Sampson, who created the program.)

I hope that helps, and good luck.

I heard that they’re releasing passed prescreenings first then denies later!

Noooooooooo!!!

Has anyone even been denied from Oberlin yet?

Yes, you definitely want to give the “I am relaxed and enjoying myself” vibe. Don’t go in stiff. My S thought that the USC people last year were very warm and made him feel comfortable. It was obvious that they read his application carefully because they asked him questions about his experience performing with his band. Out of his 3 auditions he felt he performed the strongest there and I am sure feeling comfortable had a lot to do with it.

My S brought a CD of his band’s original music and handed it to them.

Just waiting on UT Austin and CU Boulder

violingirl I understand your worrying but if it makes you feel any better my son’s friend heard back from NEC last week and did not make it past the NEC prescreen (Piano-Jazz)

Has anyone heard from Frost pre-screens yet? How about Berklee December auditions?

Violingirl-

This is from the NEC website:

“As described in the Audition Requirements, some programs require a prescreening recording before an invitation to audition is made. For fall semester applicants, prescreening results are typically sent by the middle of January to applicants whose prescreening recording was received on time. Prescreening results are sent via email.”

It sounds like there isn’t a uniform time so not hearing may not mean anything, it sounds like they are probably going through the list of applicants and deciding as they go and letting people know on that basis whether they made it or didn’t. It doesn’t sound like they let the people who made it in early and then let those rejected know later, given that someone else got a reject notice before this time.

FWIW, my S is waiting to hear from NEC as well with a pre screen.

I hope so! Good luck to everyone!!

JerseyRockMom. No word from Frost yet, but any day now. Berklee is supposed to be on Jan 31. Good luck.

@violingirl-
I just thought of something, did your friend that got notified they got an audition at NEC study with a teacher privately who teaches there? Normally the schools seem to let people know at the same time (from what I know of the process, it is department by department), once they have made all the decisions. If your friend studies with a teacher at NEC, it is possible they were on the panel and knew right at that point they made it. I have seen that before with other programs, where if your teacher is on the panel, they will let their kids know first. If your teacher isn’t involved, then everyone tends to find out at the same time IME (and that is all it is, my experience).

So it turns out my teachers didn’t send in my letter of rec to NEC or Oberlin yet…

Come on guys, you were supposed to get an email as soon as I submitted!

Oh well, Oberlin granted me an extention up to the end of the month.

Now I know for sure I’m not getting into NEC.

@atredis-
Can I make a recommendation? Don’t give up on NEC, call up the admissions department and explain what happened, and see what they say. If you pass the pre screen, you may still get an audition and they may simply tell you to get the letter of rec in ASAP…but don’t assume you are zeroed out. I am sorry your teacher fouled up like that, you have every right to be angry…I suspect NEC may be understanding, because they know what music teachers often are like,many of them quite frankly are on another planet at times:). I hope it works out for you, I am sure it will:)

There is a lesson there, about the application process, you kind of have to shepherd it, my S had to make sure that the people he needed recs from, his teacher from an online school, music teachers, chamber coaches and such, got them in, and it wasn’t always easy.

“We plan on sending prescreening results in early January for Violin, Cello, Piano, Conducting, Jazz and Composition”

NEC

And every school probably has a different approach regarding receiving all required materials. Juilliard has scheduled an audition for my daughter, even though her teacher hasn’t sent in his recommendation yet.

@JerseyRockMom and anyone else waiting on Frost SOM. My D received an email today confirming that she passed the pre-screen and is scheduled for a live audition for the Studio Music and Jazz Vocal Program. She also got an email from Larry Lapin the Director of the program saying that he enjoyed her pre-screen and would like to talk to her to answer any questions she may have.

Good luck to the rest of you.

Thanks Christine. Congrats to your D and good luck at the audition! Nothing here at all from Frost yet…

Thank you JerseyRockMom. Which program did your D apply to? Mine was for Studio Music and Jazz. If it’s for a different program, maybe they haven’t started ending emails yet. I know that a previous email my D received from Frost said that they intended to notify everyone by the end of Dec, but that if you didn’t hear something by Jan 4, then you should contact them.
