Audition experience?! :) Curious

Soo...I've been thinking, and I know not everyone is perfect, but I've been wondering, during anyone's audition did you mess up? Like with the dance or song? And what was the outcome? were you still admitted? Just curious.

During my daughter’s first audition, she had some vocal problems with part of her first song. They asked her to sing it again, and gave her some suggestions and direction; she was accepted and ended up attending the school (Syracuse).

Omg that’s so interesting actually! Haha…I’m just really nervous for my auditions next year! But Syracuse is definitely at the head of my list!

It’s a terrific program; my D graduated 2 years ago. If you’d like any specific info about the program, feel free to PM me.

Will do! thanks

My D sang a different verse than the pianist was playing. They had moments before told her to sing 32 bars instead of the full song they had originally asked for, and her brain was still at the top of the song and the accompanist was at the end. The pianist stopped playing out of confusion. My D kept going and sang acapella. She thought that was that, but happily she was accepted.

Omg what school?

Great question! I know a girl who was told at her audition: “Don’t ever sing that song at an audition again.” And she got in!

My D prepared for her choreographed dance audition for University of the Arts in a room that was bigger than the audition room. She ran into the wall once and kicked it once, and got in.

Wow lol that is really interesting!!

How is University of the Arts? And is it a Certificate program or Actual degree program?

This is a great thread. Keeps it real and also offers the opportunity to show the humanity of both the students and the auditors involved in this process.

Though I guess there are plenty of less fun stories of mess ups that result in rejection, this is the one I remember:

My daughter starts to sing and nervously sings so loudly that she cannot hear the accompanest and goes off key. Gets done and knows that it was terrible. The group says “can we try that again?” because I think by that point they knew they liked her. She looks at them and says, “yeah sorry I was nervous and couldn’t hear” THEN she has this great moment where all of her training kicks in and suddenly she quietly mutters to herself but they heard it, “never say you are sorry”. She then looks them all in the eye and says confidently, “No, I am NOT sorry!”

They laughed and let her sing it again. She got in.

Cool! What school?

Devonte, University of the Arts offers a BFA in MT. It is an arts based university in central Philadelphia. There is a full section on UArts at the top of the home page, with alot of good information.

Oh sorry: UCLA

When my D auditioned for UCLA, she was really get into the dance portion and said she felt like she was nailing it. When it came her turn, she was going up for a high kick and suddenly found herself flat on her rear end. She said that mentally, she figured that was it so she might as well just have fun. She got up and kept going, and when it came to the section where you choreograph you own, she went all out. At the end, they made a comment about how all dancers make mistakes and fall, but it is how you handle it that counts. She was auditioning as a transfer, and ended up being the only transfer accepted that year. (She ended up attending another program). Moral of this story- just keep going and do your best if you make a mistake. Also, if you start off a song wrong, there is nothing wrong with stopping and politely asking if you can start over. Always take your time to go over your music with the accompanist before you start-don’t let them hurry you- and always, always thank the accompanist (and everyone, of course) when you are done. I remember my D also had an audition where, even though she had gone over the tempo with the accompanist before she started, he went crazy fast. She stopped and asked if he could slow it down…don’t remember what school.

Also a UArts story at Chicago Unifieds: told here once before in another thread. Very, very, small room, auditioner who started my daughter 20 minutes late, even though she was his first one, dropped audio tape on the floor from when he moved in that my daughter stepped on, and very low hung chandelier that she kicked AND she got in (but went somewhere else, altho UArts was a close second choice). Don’t ever give up or assume anything!

Also, UArts is an excellent AND very competitive MT BFA program in the thriving Philadelphia theater arts community. Everyone should definitely look at it for college and for its outstanding summer MT program that is much lower cost than others and offers scholarships. My daughter loved it after her high school sophomore year!

My D realized a few bars in she was singing the wrong cut for big name school audition. She stopped, asked to start again, and it went well. She did not tell me this story until we heard that she was accepted.

I’m a Freshmen MT and I totally messed up on the dance since I’m not the best dancer in the world. I was really scared because Point Park is really well known for their dancer department. But I still got accepted! And I’m there right now.
But you always have to remember they don’t want “perfect” people. They want people with potential. Just go into the audition doing the best you can, and show your character. They really like that :)

If you have any other questions feel free to pm me. I’ll gladly answer! And also, I did unifieds and if that’s what you’re going to do and have any questions — I’m here! :)
