Hi! If I remember correctly there was a thread last year about audition experiences, but as we all know that sometimes things change from year to year, I thought it would be a good idea for people who have/will audition this year to post their experiences. Weather, transportation, hotels, campus, parents' activities, even the general mood of the others who are auditioning...any info is sure to be useful to someone.

I will have my first audition on Feb. 12 and I will post my experience that evening. If anybody has already auditioned this year it would be good if you can post your experience/thoughts.

I looked at the 2010 audition thread and it seemed most people wanted to talk about the hotels they stayed in and where they had dinner. I am looking for more information about the students’ actual experiences in the auditions. I hope people who post in this thread will stick to that.

The thing is, I can’t control how the kid does in the audition or the mood of the other people in the lobby. What I can use is information from knowledgeable people about which hotels they recommend and where can we get a good dessert afterwards. Good luck to all of this year’s candidates!

There was a lot of detailed info on how specific auditions were organized, the availability of warm-up rooms (or lack thereof), which specific audition elements were heard by the panels, etc. There was also valuable info about hotels-- such as the hotel at CIM, so well-situated and reasonably priced, that tends to lose reservations.

Try searching ““school name” auditions” for the specific schools you’re looking for. Most of the major programs have a number of separate audition question titled threads.

Please keep posting about hotels, restaurants etc. I have found the 2010 thread invaluable! It has helped me book most of our hotels for this year. We will be starting our “away” auditions this coming week at UMich. I’ll be sure to post afterwards.

We are local to the school (an hour away) so it was just a day trip for us. We found the school to be very organized; registration only took 5 mins. D was given a full half hour in a warm-up room, which was nice. There was a panel of 3, and the audition lasted a full 15 minutes. She was allowed to choose her first piece and then they chose. Afterwards she had to stay and take a 45 min MAP test and then a 30 min theory test.

She was nominated (by the first auditioning panel)for their “20/20 honors performance” scholarship program so she then had to stay longer, sign-up and audition again in the afternoon for a different panel. Again, plenty of warm-up rooms were available. That audition was video taped by one of the directors because the other director on the panel was sick. Made for a long day, but if she gets the money, it will be well worth it :)

flute1298, congrats. Mine was in 20/20, and found it amazing. Good luck to your D. If she gets in, you’ll get to see the performances in the redone Berkman venue. While the old was acoustically fine, appearance/comfort wise it was the pits.

Music Apptitude Test. My D said she hopes it doesn’t count for much because she apparently doesn’t have any “apptitude” for music. :-)) It was a listening test and honestly, that’s all she said before we got distracted. I never got a chance to ask her more about it.

The boy has had three so far - only 10 to go :oO

Emerson was wonderful - confirmed our enthusiasm for the school. Really sweet to the parents and the boy reported that they were very warm and encouraging to him as well. The dance call with Shawn is intentionally basic. They want the kids to feel comfortable and, as a dance teacher I can attest to the fact that, they can see what they need to see without beating the kids senseless with insane combinations. They want to see you perform. So jump in, show your passion and enjoy it! The boy said the monologue session was fun. After he delivered his monoloque he was asked to improvise with it which he enjoyed. He said the auditors were really cool and he felt totally comfortable and “at home”. The vocal audition was equally relaxed and enjoyable. We live nearby so I don’t have hotel info but there are TONS of options for food all over the block that Emerson sits on from cheap eats to gourmet and, of course, Boston’s back bay is right there with all kinds of shopping!

Baldwin-Wallace was next. We had no idea what to expect but we LOVED IT. They have the parents and kids watch a master class where they bring in a legit agent who works with their current students. We were blown away. The talent is remarkable but beyond that, it is clear the faculty at B-W knows what they are doing. Ok, so, the audition… There is a music theory and piano apptitiude segment. This is just so they can see where you would be placed and has no bearing on whether or not you get into the school. The song/monologue section had 3 auditors (the directors of the program). Then, in a separate dance call, all of the auditors observe as well. They asked for a ballet combination that rotated across the floor (on only one side - never reversed?!) and a fun/quick jazz combo. We stayed at the Comfort Inn (free shuttle service to/from the airport & BW) and ate at Olive Garden which is right across the parking lot. We were only disappointed that we didn’t have time to check out Cleveland which we were told is just minutes away.

Last weekend was Ithaca. We were gathered in the theatre to await the boy’s call. They have many students from the various theatre programs onstage for Q&A throughout the day (for us it was over three hours in the theatre). The actual audition was really quick. 1 or 2 auditors for song and monologue - 5 mintues total. No dance call. I’m really glad the boy knows kids in Ithaca’s theatre department 'cuz that was where he got a real feel for the school. I don’t think the audition day at Ithaca showed what they are about as effectively as the other two schools we’ve seen so far. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (which is surprisingly nice) in downtown Ithaca. There are a ton of food options in the Commons. I can’t rave enough about Delila’s = YUM!

And, tomorrow = Hartt. Will let you know :o)

I did appreciate the review of Emerson, since my youngest D will probably apply there next year for straight-up acting. So don’t feel that your post here was for naught!
