Audition for MT but still considered for Acting?

I have a few students who will be applying next year who are interested in MT and Acting and want to apply to programs that will consider them for both. Can you help me create a list of schools that will consider you for Acting even if you apply for MT?

The ones I know off the top of my head are:

NYU
CMU
Ithaca
Emerson
Indiana (for BA Acting)

Thanks!

Coastal Carolina
Western Michigan

At Texas State, you can audition for both at the same time, but you must apply to each separately, including pre-screens.

At Rider and at CCPA-Roosevelt my D asked to be considered for both programs at her audition. They asked her if she would be interested in acting in addition to MT right before she went in to the auditions and she said yes. At Rider acting is a BA program but at CCPA it is also a BFA.

Indiana’s BA Acting is a great program and it is non-audition.

Syracuse
OCU - must let them know at audition you wish to be considered for both

When my D applied to Western Michigan, Webster, and Wisconsin-Stevens Point each advised her to audition for both the MT and acting programs as they had quite a bit of overlap in terms of performances, training, etc. In fact she just got a call yesterday offering her a spot in the acting program at Western.

I think Otterbein does this, but you should double-check–my son applied for straight acting everywhere so I was only marginally aware of the MT–>acting options.

You can definitely apply to both at Otterbein. Friend who auditioned for primarily MT, was accepted into Acting, and this spring of her freshman year, reauditioned for MT and is moving over. Acting and MT take a lot of classes together, either way.
One caution about Roosevelt; it may have changed, but 2 years ago they advised us that MT kids could not try out for straight acting shows and vice-versa. The programs appeared to be kept separate.

JMU does as well.

Hartt
University of Miami

Yes… at JMU students must indicate that they want to be considered for both when they schedule their audition appointment, and address what they like about the both programs in their essay, however when they do that they are considered for both programs. It is likely that those who indicate they would like to be considered for both will perform their auditions before both the theatre and musical theatre faculties.

Times3 and Christie are correct . . . that’s my girl to whom Christie was referring. :0) And I know Webster does that for sure too.

Regarding Ithaca . . . last year my D had to select “MT, Acting or both” on her application and she selected “MT only” or wording to that effect. From the posts this year, it sounds as if kids were accepted into the acting program regardless if they selected “MT only”. I apologize if I read that wrong. I believe this is a change from past years and just something that is a minor tweak to the phrase, “Audition for MT, but still considered for acting.”

Following up on Christie2’s comment above about Roosevelt/CCPA, here is the response I received today from one of their admissions couselors:

"Thank you for your interest in CCPA. Decision letters will be emailed April 1st.

This is accurate. The musical theatre students will take the same acting classes
as our acting students and they will also have plenty of opportunities to do
straight acting in their classes, but the main stage plays are for the acting
students and the musicals are only for our MT students.

However, the faculty at CCPA are keen on preparing each student for any type of
audition outside of school. Our theatre majors are exposed to dance, acting, and
singing, and the students also take specific performance art classes like
Chinese Theatre and circus class. Really, what we are trying to do is prepare
them for any type of audition they may come across. Most, if not all of our
students, graduate and perform in both plays and musical theatre as well as
film."

At UCLA, I don’t think it is unheard of. The MT students are in the same acting classes as the (non-MT) actors, so the acting portion of the audition is the same. I believe, though, that you must let them know at audition you wish to be considered for both.
