Audition if Taking a Gap Year

I am planning on taking a GAP Year as I feel it is best for me and have specific things I will be doing during that time. I was encouraged by my high school to apply so I would be part of the process all the seniors at school will be going through and not feel left out. I have learned that two of the schools I was going to apply and audition to will not give you a deferment for a GAP Year and that I should apply and audition during the GAP Year. Does anyone know what schools allow this? Taking a GAP year prior to your Freshman Year? Does anyone know if NYU TISCH allows you defer if you get accepted in their BFA Drama or MT?

Tisch does indeed allow you to defer. I have a friend who wanted to graduate early, did so and was accepted to Tisch, then regretted her decision and wanted to return to high school for her final year. She deferred Tisch for a year and is currently still in high school.

I’m taking a Gap Year right now, and I went through the audition process last year and already know what school I’m going to. I would recommend you do as your school tell you and apply just as your classmates are doing: first of all, if you have a sudden and unexpected change of heart about your year off, you have some options. Secondly, you won’t have to worry about the stress and money of auditions and can focus on what you do during your year off! If you were wanting to travel abroad or maybe do something that requires a large time commitment, it may be difficult to schedule that around all your auditions. Along with that, if there are certain schools you wish to audition for that do not allow you to defer, you will be even more prepared and confident going into them next year after you experience the college “casting” process this year.
Feel free to message me if you have any more questions about taking a Gap Year or just in general!

Thank you CandianMTgirl and MusicalManiac for you input. I’m going to have to give this some thought seeing that a few of the schools I’m interested in allow for gap year deferment as a incoming freshman and some do not. A part of me wants to just wait and apply and audition during my Gap year when I don’t have all the school work responsibilities of senior year overwhelming me. I just finished performing in a school production that took a lot of my available time and now feel pressure to get out applications, essays and prepare for auditions in a short period of time.

I am taking a GAP year after auditioning at the LA auditions last February…I realized it wasn’t the time for me but I do want to go to college so I’m auditioning again this year and because of my experiences last year I have more of idea of what I really want for myself. Even if you do not go for many schools or plan to go who knows you may have different decisions in the moment. I suggest at least auditioning for a few schools you will learn so much and be way better prepared for auditions next year.
