Audition List Help

Hi,

I plan I going to college for a BFA in either Musical Theatre or Theatre and Drama. I saw another post that used math to figure out that you should audition for approximately 10-12 programs. I have a list of colleges I want to apply to, but I'm not sure where else I should consider. None of these are finalized, and I would love to hear feedback about this current list, good and bad, and what other schools I should consider. Thanks!

Musical Theatre:
University of Michigan
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music (CCM)
Western Michigan University
Texas State University - San Marcos
Ithaca College
Otterbein University
Oklahoma City University

Theatre and Drama:
University of Michigan
Pace University

You have picked some highly selective schools where the admission rate is extremely low. It is very important that you include at least one safety school on your list; one that doesn’t require an audition, that you are academically qualified for, and that you would be happy to attend. You don’t want to be left with no options after the auditions are over. Although I am sure you are talented, these schools turn down hundreds of talented applicants every year.

The only schools I am not familiar with on this list are Western Michigan and Texas State; the others are generally considered among the top schools in the country.

Your list consists of top tier audition programs. If you learn anything from reading the posts on CC it is you need safeties… both non audition schools and financial safeties.

I had the same observation as the posts from onstage and lojosmo: your list consists of schools that are all or almost all among the most difficult to gain acceptance in the country. Michigan, CMU, and CCM are “lottery schools” for even the top applicants, Texas State is now very competitive, Otterbein only admits a handful, and so on. Unless you are confident that you are among the top applicants in the country for your type, you may want to consider adding/substituting one or more schools where the competition for admission is a little lower than “fantastically high.”

So the schools I have put an asterisk next to are considered top tier schools, not necessarily because of how good their program s are, but purely based of off admission rates. The Schools I put a ~ next to are second tier schools. These are schools that have auditions, are easier to get into than the top tier schools, but are still very competitive. What you are lacking are third tier and safety schools. You can go to the big list of musical theatre schools in this forum and just start researching the ones that are non-audition and look interesting. Keep in mind that list of 10-12 schools was only posted as a guideline. Every kid’s list will be different, so don’t feel like you have to be held to that exact number.

ALL of the schools are difficult to get into. In the end the difference between a school that admits 2% of applicants and 10% is small – for practical purposes per individual are equally competitive.

You would be better off to create a more balanced list of schools that includes at least one academic, financial, non-auditioned safety that you would be happy to attend.

The programs you have listed are all very different from one another and are all over the country. What attributes are you looking for in a program?

I am assuming that you are a HS freshman, sophomore, or junior… since it is late for a HS senior to just now be putting together a list of schools.

I am not certain that Pace is more difficult to get into than Ithaca or Otterbein.

Not in the safety school category… but you may want to look at Syracuse, Elon, Penn State, Rider, Baldwin Wallace. They are similar to some of the other schools on your list in terms of the programs.

What state are you from?

Hi all,

I know that these are competitive, but I am not looking for any kind of academic or non-audition school. I have back-ups if I don’t make it into a program, but I will hopefully, fingers crossed, not have to use those. I’m looking more for reasons to keep, delete, or add schools to this list.

KatMT, I’m mainly looking a little things in schools right now. I was able to delete schools from a previous list I had simply based on whether or not they had a showcase, cost, etc. About Elon, I’ve heard it’s prestigious, but other than that I haven’t heard much. Do you know any specifics? Thanks!
