That was a layer that we did not have to deal with. All of daughter's auditions required that she not use an accompanist.

thanks everyone! We are all set, rehearsing in nyc on Thursday with the accompanist there (who was very kind and flexible) and going up to Boston on Friday to take the early Saturday rehearsal with the nec accompanist. ds is only applying to 2 reach schools with plans to take a gap year if he doesn't get in, so we may be doing this all again next year for more schools. i found this quite enough of a logistical tangle with only two schools to worry about. my hat's off to those travelling to multiple auditions all over the country. Good luck to everyone!

Good luck to you and your son.

Thank you, violaDad!

Aurgh! Now that the arrangements are all set and there is nothing more for me to take care of, the real worry sets in. Bites nails. Toss turn, pace pace.

The waiting/not knowing is the hardest. It will all be over fairly soon.

Another five or six weeks. That should only feel like about three years...

Be careful, though, once you have the outcomes, time really speeds up in April.

And then the next thing you know, you're crying like a baby for hours on your drive home after dropping them off - at least some people do that - I've heard.

And then feeling really sad that you can't go to every one of their performances, as you did for all the years until they left for college....

You definitely need a hobby from auditions until late March, Stringkeymom. That last week of March was interminable!

the audition/senior year pace from Feb through April is intense.D changed clothes in bathrooms, got caught in a killer snowstorm on the road to Ithaca, had flight delays into Oberlin, slept on a dorm floor in Baltimore between Peabody and U Maryland auditions, finally collapsed crying, in a heap of emotions, onto the floor in a hallway after her ASU audition and was mortified when the studio teacher (flute) came out and found her(its where she wound up attending!!). It was a whirlwind time with ensemble, orchestra obligations as well.
And then, as everyone says, its all over. Take a deep breath at that time...college/conservatory after that will be a piece of cake!!
Best of luck to your S on his auditions.

thanks everyone! a friend yesterday told me in years to come i would look back and miss these days with the traveling around together and the camaraderie of shared suffering and hopes.

i've heard so many snowstorm/audition horror stories now, i'm thinking of renting a sled and dogs....

I loved absolutely every minute of it - even the March blizzard in Ohio which made us almost miss one of the most important auditiions. I miss my son and his music a lot this year and envy those who still have them home. He's going to spend most of the summer here working with his old teacher and we're so happy!

stringfollies, I thought I remembered you pulling your hair out last year. ;) Yes, now you can look back and recall the fun times of the process.

stringkey mom did you mention sled dogs? Too bad d is still in Hobart, or she'd love the gig. If you're unfamiliar with "d's" story, I direct you to some background from the rather infamous Metathread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1060280742-post12.html

Don't blame me... garland started it. :D

AHAHAHAHAHA!! That is the funniest thing I have read all week, no, all year.

But I guess you had to sell off all the dogsled stuff to finance D's education. That's ok, I understand.

Hey, Wait! We need those sled dogs!! I went right through a stop light on slippery roads in the snow on the way to D's audition on Friday!!! LOVE the piece of creative writing- Best laugh we've had in weeks! Thanks!

We're 3/4 of the way through then ten day trek. This is our one day off so we're sleeping in, and actually going to see one of S2's favorite jazz drumMers at a club tonite. I am so grateful for the travel advice from all of you. We tried to arrive a day early to each location, and not on the last flight of the day. Thank goodness for that, as we have dealt with missed connections (we had one emergency landing that aged me 30 years) and cancelled flights, by we've been ok audition-wise.

I'm also clinging to hope that the auditions he feels worst about (played well but screwed up the rudiments) weren't as bad as he imagined. But like you all said, this has been a great trip together. This boy is smart and insightful and sensitive and self-aware and talented. He deserves to get his heart's desire. I so hope he does!!

I'm so glad you're having a good trip, and I wish your son great success in all his auditions! I'm sure you've read, as I have, the numerous accounts in these threads of students accepted at schools where they were less happy with their auditions. A recent example is the violist in my son's quartet who was miserable after her audition until one of the faculty came out into the hall after her and informed her she was accepted. Wishing everyone here the same!

Thanks Stringkeymom! This will be a long month for many of us! Nice to have an experienced, empathetic community!
