Hi! I am looking for help on repertoire for upcoming auditions:
Spots that could use new material in my book:
Contemporary uptemo
Contemporary ballad
Comedic
Pop

About me: I am a tenor. tall. white, usually an ingenue or leading man type. age range around 17-21
Favorite shows: Sunset Boulevard, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park..., West Side Story, Carrie, Next To Normal.

These should be safe to take to auditions and not too terribly overdone. i really like obscure things. I am a giant fan of (Lord) Sondheim, Coleman, and Finn.

Hard to tell you what to select, but many schools have Sondheim on their ‘do not use’ list… primarily because the music is difficult for the accompanists. There are many threads on the forum about ‘do’ and ‘do not’ songs for auditions. I’d suggest doing some research before you fall in love with anything. :)

You sound like a friend of ours who is now working in an EMC capacity (my d was his leading lady in a production and we helped him with his audition for the EMC program and he just got a callback for elder price for the national tour).
For contemporary ballad he likes “her voice” from little mermaid. I know it’s Disney, but the song is spectacular. “make them hear you” from ragtime is also amazing if you have good color to your voice. BARE is really popular with the edgyer mt guys but there are some great acting songs in that show as well.

For comedy I would pick “girl can I kiss you with tongue” from cry baby or you can also check out the songs from Triassic park or jerry springer the rock opera.

Pop songs you’re on your own. But you can always choose something Priscilla queen of the desert (without the accent), it’s pop musical theatre style.
Break a leg and let us know what you choose!!

Like Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown songs are difficult for even the most accomplished accompanists to play – in fact, at my S’ audition this weekend, the musical director of the MT program, who’s had a long career as an MD, conductor, composer, and music educator, said during the parent Q&A, “No JRB, please!”

Actingmt it is a long process- 2 years for this one, but it’s paid with room included. So he’s doing that in lieu of college and so far it’s working out amazingly.

^Now I want to rewrite some bare songs to sound like they were written by JRB!

I’m not sure if it’s overused (thought I highly doubt it is), but I think Come Back from Dogfight might be a good choice. It shows off acting and vocal skills in equal measures. Also, All At Once from Unlock’d might work- that has more of a traditional sound to it, which sounds like it might be good for you.

Actually, if you’re looking for very contemporary, obscure material (which I’m assuming you are, since you said you like it) I think it would be worth going to newmusicaltheatre.com and looking around. There are a lot of very talented up-and-coming composers who sell their music through them (Pasek and Paul, Adam Gwon, Kerrigan and Lowdermilk, Joe Iconis, etc.)

Also, be warned, the material from bare, while great for our age group, can be deceptively difficult. (Small sort-of tangent that illustrates my point: I sang All Grown Up at a competition once, and one of the comments I received was “material not very challenging.” Yeah, okay.)
