@momatplay - they say April 1st every year, but I have noticed that they seem to release on the Friday closest to April 1st. For my D that was the 28th. Of course this year April 1st IS a Friday - so people who applied there (all 2000+) will have to hang in until the bitter end. NYU was the last school my D heard from (in regular admissions, she ended up on one WL that notified in mid April) and is the school she now attends…so we like to think of it as having saved the best for last
But what about schools asking you to commit by APril 1 when you may not have heard from all the schools you applied to?
@toowonderful - thanks for the historical perspective. Now to just hang on for the next 30 days - with twelve more school yet to hear. Can’t say I like hearing a school actually releasing on April Fools Day.
My understanding is that you are not required to commit to any school until May 1st. If they are asking you to do so, they are in the wrong. @EmsDad copied the actual written rules about this in another thread. I will see if I can find it. But really read your acceptance carefully. They may make you feel like you should answer soon, but they can’t require it.
@ballet97 check out this thread which gives the answer to your question: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/875533-school-not-abiding-by-may-1st-deadline.html
Found it! Here is what @EmsDad found on the matter of when to reply:

See post #51 by @EmsDad in the thread above for explanation about having until May 1st to respond to an offer.
Last year Texas State took a student off the wait list around April 29-30 and they had already committed to another school. That student is now a thriving student at Texas State. So it can definitely happen late in the process.
@ballet97 - the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice, which almost all schools are part of, require schools to permit candidates to choose among offers of admission until May 1 - and the May 1 deadline “applies to any academic major or special program to which the candidate has been offered admission” (see excerpt below of the NACAC rules below). I believe the part of the rule stating that this “applies to any academic major or special program” was added within the past two years, so some theatre departments may not be aware of the rule and still believe that the May 1 deadline only applies to offers of admission to the university, not offers for specific majors (the old rule).
A good first step might be to contact the department and politely request an extension.
If you want to push the issue, you can contact the admissions office for the college, inform them of the situation, and ask them to intervene with the department. Admissions counselors should be happy to work out an issue like this.

Last year my son was already committed to a top tier MT school and then he got off of the wait list from his #1 mid-April. He wrote a letter to the committed school and they refunded 100% of the deposit. The fine print may say that the deposit is not refundable but I believe most schools will give it all back.
I feel like I read a story once of someone being wait listed at Western Michigan but not coming off the list in the spring and instead committing to her 2nd choice.
The student was literally like 48 hours away from moving into the dorms of her #2 school in August when she came off WMU’s wait list, changed direction and happily ended up in K’zoo.
@EmsDad … does this sound familiar or am I just making things up again? ;))
Has Michigan notified MT candidates? I saw an acceptance of a BFA Acting on March 1st.
I saw about 5 Michigan BFA Theatre Performance acceptances, but no MT.
I called Michigan’s Admissions Dept last week for a question about something else, and they told me they aren’t planning to release decisions for MT until “around March 15.”
Are all the TCU acceptances out?
I know someone who received an offer today from TCU
me too! S or D-- and when…I know of about 5
They take a very small amount of boys/girls
D received her acceptance to TCU tonight! (via email) We are so excited!
