Audition Stories -- Class of 2020

Has anyone heard from Chapman yet?
Thanks

@pursuethedream No word from Chapman yet. We’re not expecting to hear until at least the beginning of Feb.

Thanks for starting this conversation! My S. did the following auditions:
Chapman-ditto what everyone else said. He didn’t get much feedback at this as he has at the others though on his materials, which I think rattled him a bit. He had a call back at the end of the day…they said not to read into that one way or the other. If you didn’t get a call back, it could be because they have already decided to accept you and if you do, they want to see some more of you. I think he took that as a negative…but as far as I’m concerned, it meant he was still in the game!
BU at Boston-very interactive, provided positive feedback, relaxed atmosphere.

UCONN-also very interactive, provided feedback…he got an acceptance call from the Dean the following weekend, which I thought was a really, really nice thing to do.
Julliard-he enjoyed it, said that they were really nice. I personally found it intense and intimidating! Over 200 kids were there, largest day they have had. Call back via email at the end, I watched a lot of kids checking their emails in wait and saw a few who were soooo disappointed that they didn’t get a call back at the end of the day. My S. enjoyed meeting other kids and was really impressed with some of them.
UNCSA-ditto the description of UNCSA above…we were there during the snow, as well! He really liked them, said they were very warm and complimentary during the audition. They asked a few questions and that was it.
USC, PACE and CMU are left and then done! (He applied to some BAs, too, and has been accepted to LMU and WCSU.) It does seem like there are lots of kids applying for the same schools and I would think that it would be a lot of the same set of kids who get accepted to all of the schools? My S. goes to a public high school with a strong performing arts program, but nothing near the experience of the summer intensives, private performing arts boarding school, and other experiences I have heard about. I don’t know how he can compete with those who have been doing this for years and years…he just started this in high school. All of the schools say that doesn’t matter, but I think it does?! I am rooting for all of these kids…every family I have talked with has been so nice and I think that to go through this process these kids are all committed to this…so many kids all deserving the few spots available.
A few questions:
Wondering if anyone has any insight into what can be expected regarding acceptances? He had a friend two years ago, who “swept” it and got accepted to 6 competitive conservatories, and another who only got into 1…
Also, is PACE rolling acceptances or will they notify after they review all applicants?
What are the acceptance ratios for the various schools?
Wishing all of you the best!!!

@Mpartist I believe for Pace they notify you after all auditions have been complete and only if you have already been accepted academically.

Pace is rolling for academic. And fair warning- in past years they have been big callers… With random stuff like finances etc when you are waiting for the “real” call

@Mpartist @toowonderful, Would Pace’s academic acceptance come separately from the program acceptance (prior to the completion of auditions)? Do you know how long it may take typically? Also, would the merit offer come with the academic acceptance?

@Guppie - I do not have direct knowledge- D did not apply to Pace, but from friends/reading cc, it has always seemed like a pretty quick turn around - a few weeks. I have also never personally heard of someone academically rejected from Pace, it is not a competitive school in that sense. (though of course VERY competitive artistically)

@Guppie Two years ago, my S was admitted academically first - about 2 weeks after he submitted. The admission came with merit offer and offer for the honors program. He found out in March he was on the wait list for MT, then offered a spot about a week/10 days after that. He had made up his mind by then - turned down the spot - so we didn’t push the $$ offer. The merit offer was very generous to start but were told there could be additional $$ awarded after the initial merit offer.

Thx for the info.

How do we pm someone on here? Thanks new to this.

Click on their name and choose the “message” option on the next screen. (You have to have a certain number of posts, but I think 11 would do it.)

@pursuethedream - I am not sure if you have enough posts to PM yet… but if you click on a users name next to their icon, it will take you to a screen where you will see a “message” tile. I will PM you so you see the notification

@Mpartist UNCSA’s acceptance rate is about 5.6%. They accept anywhere from 20-28 out of all applicants, which ends up being around 500-600 applicants. I’m so glad you like the auditors! They’re both fantastic teachers. If you or your S have any questions, feel free to PM me and I can help you out.

@ Guppie My DS applied early Dec and He has already been academically accepted into the school. He just had his audition this past weekend at unifieds. Now we wait until March for the decision.

Does anyone know the admit rates and applicant pool for the various programs? UNCSA and Chapman are in this thread, how about some others, like each of PACE’s Acting programs, UCONN, USC, BU, etc. and the dates that applicants learn if they got in or not?

Well I auditioned at Emerson yesterday! It was my first audition this season and I don’t think it went as well as possible, but I didn’t fall on my face either. The auditor asked me which monologue I’d like to perform and when I answered comedic, he replied that he knew I was funny (we’d talked for a few minutes before) and to do my dramatic instead. Admittedly, this threw me a bit. However, I do appreciate that he did that because it taught me to not be thrown by things like that. He also gave me feedback on the monologue, though some of it was negative, but I appreciated it because I can pull that advice into the rest of my auditions. We’ll see, I guess!!

I auditioned at Pace. This was my first and only college audition, and although like @katieso says it wasn’t the best, but the experience was well worth it.

I took a four hour bus ride the night before to get to NYC, and the next day I was SO tired. I didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast, but thankfully I made it on time to the audition. They first gave us the run down of the programs, and the director of the BFA program was very funny and gave encouraging words about how they want us to succeed. He is actually contributing to Backstage and had a great idea about asking prospective freshman and seniors about the whole college acting process. Thought it was cool.

So everyone was split into groups, I was auditioning for the BA first. I was also the first person to audition, which threw me off, but I guess I should expect it because of my last name! Two of the auditor’s students were there as well, and the first question he asked me is “why Pace?” I totally froze and just said the typical the campus feels like home and the location was the main reason-- I was a new yorker at heart. Had my eyes set on the city for a while and I wish I could have conveyed that more and how Pace would help me with my arts education, but all that was going through my mind was not to mess up! He asked me to continue with my first monologue and I did. I did it very blandly and didn’t feel in character, I felt like I was just reading the script with no emotion. He asked me to continue with the second monologue and I totally messed up the lines, and asked to start over! :open_mouth: He said “thanks, and see you at the movement.” I left the room. I later found out that he asked people to do their monologues differently like crazy scenarios. That was a sure sign that I didn’t do well, not that I didn’t know that already. The movement callback was VERY fun and I wished I had done it before the audition so I could feel less anxious.

I auditioned for the BFA at 1:30. We did a scene and I was partnered with this person who was AMAZING. Before the scene, we did our monologues. The BFA auditors seemed more relaxed, which made me feel better. I did my monologue and it was a bit better than reading off a script, but definitely not on par with my prescreen. I did not get a callback, and that was the end of my first and only audition. Glad for the experience because I know what to expect in the future!

@40yearoldvirgin , glad to hear you got something out of the Pace audition. Are you applying for non-audition theatre programs?

A few question about Pace BA Acting;

  1. Would everybody get movement callback? (DD will be auditioning in Chicago next week)
  2. How big would the incoming freshman class for BA Acting be?

Yes, I applied to Columbia College Chicago as a safety. I also applied to USC which the BA only requires a phone interview. Might also take the idea of a different major and just do theatre on the side!

To answer your questions:

For the BA everyone does the movement part. I’m not sure about the BA incoming freshman class, but I know for the BFA there were about ten kids in my audition group and they only called back 4 of them, and if you weren’t called back for the movement for BFA it meant you were cut.

I would also like to mention that getting through the prescreens is also a huge accomplishment according to current students, they said many people get cut from just their prescreens. So congrats to your daughter and hope she does well!!

@40yearoldvirgin , my son got into some good programs, but not Pace. He is a sophomore BFA at USC. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Don’t give up…there are still options and possibilities available to you!
