In such a competitive admissions process, I understand how vital it is to audtion at as many schools as possible. Despite that fact, as of right now I am only auditioning for...gasp...6 programs. I know how awful that sounds, but I cannot seem to find any more schools I'd like to be at. Even if I could, my parents think auditioning for 10+ schools is totally impractical (they're supportive but they just don't understand how competitive this is). I know what a huge risk it is to audition for so few schools, but I'm applying to some back-up schools that I know I could make myself happy at. Any advice? Or, should I say, reassurance?

As you say “I’m applying to some back-up schools that I know I could make myself happy at.” You can always re-audition as a transfer after a year. And this way you can put your energy/$$ into preparation for the auditions. I’m brand new here, so you can take it with a grain of salt-- but it’s important to go somewhere you love and fit well, not just to go anywhere, and you sound very mature and thoughtful about the process.

claire, are your ‘back-ups’ in addition to the six audition schools? You should always have a non-audition school where you are an academic safety and where you’d be happy. I understand that you want to be able to attend a school where you could be happy, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, as you clearly know, this process is very competitive and I guess you need to decide which you want more, being totally happy with the school you attend or pursuing the best training you can get. The one thing I’ll caution you about is that students sometimes realize that their dream school isn’t such a dream once they’re actually there. In other words, it’s not always possible to tell how much you’ll like a school until you’ve matriculated.

It’s really impossible for any of us to advise you, without knowing you or your academic profile or training to say whether or not six auditions will be enough. Back when my D auditioned, if I’m remembering correctly, she had eight schools on her list. I know from reading CC in the intervening years that a lot of students audition to more than that today. Have you considered attending Unifieds? That may allow you to audition for a few extras. One thing I would not plan on or rely on is re-auditioning for transfer. Yes, people do transfer but it is even more competitive than freshman admissions and it may likely be even more difficult to arrange travel and auditions when you’re a college student. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the input!

Our son auditioned for 10 programs and was accepted to 5. If you are only going for the tough programs…either go for a safety non-auditioned school or add a few to the mix. You have one chance at this.
