Auditions!

Our son is auditioning in the morning session; we're staying at the Courtyard and have tix to see Spike Heels Friday night.

I'm auditioning tomorrow in D.C. Wish me luck! Does anyone know what portion of the audition is first?

Break a leg...I only know in Syracuse they start with Dance.

Nocca,
My D will be there tomorrow, too. Both of you should get a good night's sleep! It sounds like a beautiful location. Good Luck!

My friend and I are both auditioning on the 27th, I can't believe how soon it is!

I just thought I would let you know that my daughter thouroughly enjoyed her audition for Syracuse in D.C. She thought they were extremely pleasant and easy to work with. They had her sing both of her songs and asked her to repeat the songs a few different times changing them up a bit. They also kept some kids longer in the dance audition. She felt like it was the stronger dancers from the group. Anyway, they made her feel welcome, helped her relax and it was a pleasant not too stressful experience. Of course, now... the waiting comes until the middle of March. Good luck to everyone. Enjoy!

My daughter auditioned Saturday the 13th. They were very nice. Is there a page to go to to see if they have received transcripts, recs and everything? So mid March is when they hear?

Two years ago, I do not believe there was an online place to check if an application file was complete for Syracuse. You can call if you have not received any notification. Some schools send out notifications, others only send if incomplete, others use email or online pages, and still others you can call to check. My daughter learned of her acceptance in mid March two years ago (in the hospital in her case...which is why I recall when it was).

https://apply.embark.com/ugrad/syracuse/24/

This is where you can go to see your status for Syracuse. Also, did your S/d audition in the a.m.? My daughter was in the a.m. group. And, mid-March is what it says. Good luck! I'm keeping my toes and fingers crossed!

cindystamps and accept - I am glad to hear that your daughters had good experiences at Syracuse! I posted my thoughts on my audition (in Nov.) which were not so positive. I have heard many others say, however, that they have had great experiences auditioning at Syracuse, so hopefully my opinions are the odd one out! Just goes to show, always take these things with a grain of salt :)

Kasl - My D's experience was more like yours. She found the adjudicators to be standoffish. She suspects that she may not have been what they were looking for in the dance portion, and so they may not have been interested after that. Unlike some other schools who use the dance audition for placement only, Syracuse includes those results as part of the "formula" for acceptance.
Still, it's hard to work at your audition prep, only to feel unwanted right off the bat at the audition. Unfortunately, that's like the real world. My good wishes go out to you for your next audition experiences. Keep the spirits up!
And in the end... you never know what's going to happen!

My experience was very similar to both mizlyn's D and kasl24's. I was not a strong dancer and after that first dance chunk, I definitely felt a little coldness from the adjudicators. I also felt, as Kasl said, that the people running the auditions (students and other folks not judging) weren't as warm and welcoming as they have been at other places. All that being said, I was invited to lunch with a very amiable group of MT freshmen and we had a great time. They're the only reason Syracuse is still high up there on my list.
P.S. Kasl, it's their loss; you're such a talented dancer!

haha thanks danimal, and yeah those MT freshmen (if they are the ones I met) were really nice and they definitely made up a little for some of the other people I met!

and mizlyn, you are so right, in the real world (not that college auditions aren't "real"), auditors will probably act in a similar fashion! It is always good to be prepared for any kind of reaction in this crazy world of performing arts! Thanks for the good thoughts :)

Just keep in mind that the people who are jerky are often the ones without tenure!

S's audition on Sat 1/20 went pretty well by his account. He found the dance portion challenging but he has limited dance experience so wasn't surprised. Apparently, the group is split in two so kids will have different sets of auditors, depending on the assigned grouping. His acting/musical theatre auditors were very encouraging and took quite a bit of time with him, asking him questions and fielding his questions. He sang both of his songs as well. He didn't think that was the case with kids auditioning for the other set of auditors. This was his first audition and served to help him understand expectations as he goes into the rest he has scheduled.

My d's audition went well too. She has been dancing since she was 3 years old, and found the dance audition very challenging. The instructor wasn't Tony the head of the dept, from reports from other people Tony's audition was a lot easier. She sang both songs, everyone was very nice to her. She loved the school. Her first audition too. She feels she would be very happy at Syracuse. Snow and all.

Isn't Jim Clarke the head of the dept?

Sorry, Tony we believe is the head of the dance dept.

Jim Clarke is the Dept. Head for the Drama Department. There is no Dance Department at Syracuse. Tony is an Associate Professor in the Drama Dept. and his expertise is DANCE. I think he may "head" the dance part of the program and has the "highest" ranking in terms of faculty position in the department when it comes to dance. There are Asst. Professors, etc. in dance in the Drama Dept., but Tony is an Assoc. Professor. So, he is basically the head "honcho" when it comes to dance in the Drama Dept. Tony is the one who conducted the dance audition (which my D thought was a very good dance audition) when she auditioned for Syracuse. Tony has a degree from Juilliard and once headed Hartford Ballet.

^^i really like tony. he was very nice and professional at the auditions. I enjoyed working with him at summer college. my audition room was nice. i auditioned nov.10 and i was the first person in my audit room..lol...kinda nervous..but i guess i did alright cuz i got in..lol. The ppl at Syracuse U are generally nice. in the drama dept especially.
