Okay, this isn't really a college audition question, but I would really appreciate any feedback..

I'm auditioning for my city's professional theatre's summer season here soon, and I'm really having trouble finding an appropriate song to use. The shows they're doing this season are The Producers, The Music Man, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and High School Musical 2.

Normally they'll ask you to sing just one song, but occasionally two. I'm a 5'2" blonde mezzo-soprano. I'm primarily a mixy-belter, but I also have strong high and low-notes. I'm also a pretty strong character actress, and I would like to show that off if at all possible. Do you have any suggestions? Any feedback would be appreciated! Thank you all so much, I've really been having trouble with this!

It doesn’t sound like you’d be right for Marian, but could you be cast as Oola? If so, try a sexy belty-type song, ala “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”, etc. And then maybe a Weber song or something pop that would work for HSM.

Well I’m auditioning as an apprentice so I probably wouldn’t be considered for any leads except maybe Zaneeta in the Music Man or a few roles in High School Musical 2… and it’s all one audition, so I need to pick a song that would work for all four of the musicals, or at least as many as possible… just to clarify :)

In that case, since you have 3 modern shows and one classic, I would suggest picking a belty song from something post-1980. Focus on something humorous or with a strong character, since that’s your strong point. These 4 shows are all very different, so no one song you pick is going to be appropriate for all of them!

This is an area that my D hates, when you hvae 16 bars for a season. The few times D has done this she has either selected something directly related to one of the shows, or treid a cross section. What about something from Hairspray? The characters are young and they have a popish style that might worl for HSM 2 and Joseph well.

I was thinking of singing spring cleaning by chris miller… I’m just afraid that the accompanist will have trouble with it! It’s not Sondheim or anything, but that always makes me nervous…

I’ve never seen the music to that one. If you’re not sure, find a good pianist and ask if it seems difficult. If the answer is yes, stay away from it for auditions!
