<p>I am confused and hope somebody can help. From the website it seems that the only kids who audition are early decision candidates and students who are already at AU. My D is interested in the straight acting, with possibly a MT minor. Her friend who is applying said there is no audition for prospective students who are not applying but from this thread it sounds like kids have been auditioning. Can anyone help me understand this? <p>I have had many students audition at and be admitted to American. There was a required audition for admission as freshmen. These were NOT ED candidates.</p>

<p>Yes, thanks I saw that when I looked again, of course AFTER I had started this thread. But my D’s friend who can’t make those audition dates said she will apply and attend if none of her BFA’s work out and has been told it’s not hard to audition in as a freshman. Does this make sense to you? We have sort of the same problem, I think there are auditions that weekend for my D too. What do people do in this instance? Thanks–</p>
<p>I cannot answer that question about if you can audition into the major once you are already a student there. I would want to ask that directly with the school. Frankly, that would not appeal to me to have chosen a school primarily for its theater program and enroll without knowing if I could be in it. </p>
<p>Every student I have had from all over the country who have applied to American, auditioned live. They had to juggle all their audition dates on a calendar as well. I also have a former student attending there (she is from the Midwest). </p>
<p>In a competitive process, for a school that has required auditions, I would do the audition, rather than hope to transfer in after entering or sending a video or some such. That is just my view. </p>
<p>I think you should ask the school directly. I have not had a student apply who did not go to the audition.</p>
<p>One more thing, from their site, it seems you CAN audition after you are already a student at American as their Nov. audition date includes current AU students. So, that is the answer to that. But it is a personal decision for someone who is POSITIVE from the get go that they want to major in theater or MT, to choose to enter a school for theater directly or take a chance after entering to see if they are admitted. I would imagine that some of the current AU students who audition, decided AFTER entering college that they were interested in pursuing a theater major (which is typical in a liberal arts degree university!). I can’t imagine a student, like your D, who is even applying to BFA programs which IS a commitment to major in theater, then being satisfied to enter a college not know if she can even major in theater at all.</p>
<p>Thanks Soozie. It is a bit confusing, at least it’s been for me! I tend to agree with you, she should either audition there or not apply, it’s too much a risk going in if that’s why you are attending a school (vs. also a total liberal arts experience like Skidmore or Sarah Lawrence) to wait to see if you get in. We’ll just have to see if there’s any way we can do it. Although, through the grapevine, I’ve heard it’s not that competitive for current students, but who can trust the grapevine?</p>
<p>Anyone have any info on the music theory test at American? My D is auditioning this Sunday 2-14 and they say it is a 15-20 minute written test. Anyone take one of these? What should she expect?</p>
