August 4th Class Madness

Ok, so apparently the SIS system opens up to everyone on august 4th and apparently many people jump on classes at midnight.

What kind of changes could I expect to make to my schedule(get a different teacher, or..) and how do you add/drop a class without getting stuck in no man's land?

Wondering the same thing. Can entering first years add themselves to a WL? If there are say 18 kids on a WL for a class size of 180, it’s not real probable for a first year to get in to the course, right?

1) don’t try to get on at midnight, you’ll be kicking your computer for an hour trying to get on. Just wait till morning or even the next afternoon. Changes aren’t instant, anyways

2) it’s luck of the draw on switching classes. Most likely, you’ll be able to make at least one switch you want or get in a class you want that couldn’t before. Again, luck of the draw. REALLY REALLY want a class that isn’t WL? Check twice-three times a day. Have to sign up for a WL? Email the teacher (although as a first or even second year, this doesn’t really matter. The only times I’ve suckered my way into classes was pulling the “I’m in the e-school trying to a politics minor, your class is the only one that fits a req at this certain time”)

3) You can add to a WL, and for a 180 class, you can almost guarantee yourself in if you’re #18. Most likely a few will drop and the class will be expanded by 10-15. Depends on the class/teacher though…

Be calm, you have four years to fit stuff in  Also, if you’re E/A/N-school, you’ll get the classes you need, don’t freak. Enjoy trying to fill your unrestricted though  (see above whining example…it works sometimes)

JC40–> I wouldn’t say it’s completely out of the question. There will be a lot of movement around Aug 4th, and then again during the first week of classes. Some students may be on multiple wait lists when they only really want to change one, maybe two classes. There were a few times where I added myself to a wait list and was realllllly far down the wait list, and then ended up getting an invite to the class. It may take a few classes, but it can happen.

Okay, really lame question: D’s trying to add herself to a class waitlist. She said she went to enroll, went to the class that she needed, then entered the course #. She then clicked the box “waitlist if class is full” and hit next. The next screen didn’t show any type of confirmaton or anything. For first years who are learning the ins and outs of SIS, is this how you add youself to a class waitlist? Do you have to wait until tomorrow to do this? If not, is there any way to check/confirm you’re on the waitlist?

You cannot make any enrollment changes, even WL, until tomorrow! No one can.

I REALLY recommend waiting until the first week of classes. Much less frustration, and coming armed with a course action form can end the problem immediately if the professor signs it after the first class. Just enjoy your summer and “class shopping” (the first week of classes) will let you into whatever you need likely… And if not, it wasn’t happening on the 4th anyways…

Thanks, ShoeBox10, WahooGrl08, & Hazelorb!

Is about 6:30AM on August 4th a good time to try logging on SIS? I would rather have my schedule done before the fall semester starts, but if it isn’t, I won’t even bother waking up that early.

Also, do the classes that are “Closed” have waitlists starting August 4?

I have enrollment requests on SIS, but haven’t actually enrolled yet. Btw, JC40, do you know why the lab component for 1800 series chem is 3 credits whereas the lab component for 1400 and 1600 series are only 1 credit?

Hmm… I was under the impression that we can only start making changes to our schedules at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Aug 4). The orientation follow-up email I received said: “Beginning on August 4, 2010 at 8 am, the Student Information System (SIS) reopens to all undergraduate students to make adds, drops, and switches to the initial schedule that you created during Summer Orientation.”

So, are they just suggesting that we start trying to make changes at 8 am and later, or is it really unavailable until 8 am? Ich bin confus.

Also, I’m guessing that since everyone can enter SIS and make changes at whatever times they please, being an Echols scholar doesn’t give me any sort of priority registration advantages here?

^I just received this email in my UVa email address

Re: Courses for New Students

The SIS will open tomorrow, August 4, to all students. You should be able to access the system as early as 12:01 AM to look at your schedule and make adjustments though it is likely that there will be little to no drop/add activity until the week of August 23.

We would like to remind you to consider a COLA 1500 class. COLA classes are 1-credit advising seminar classes in which the instructor is also your academic advisor. About 80% of the class is devoted to the academic subject area and the remaining 20% is devoted to advising issues.

Also consider a USEM class – University seminar classes for first-year students. USEM 1570 classes count as “non-College credit” while USEM 1580 classes count as College elective credit.

We look forward to your arrival in a few weeks.

Ah, yes, checked my inbox, and it appears I’ve just received that email as well. Terrific. These COLA and USEM classes sound quite appetizing.

cheburashka – correct, priority registration only matters during the initial registration period for each semester.

Thanks for clearing that up, Rodman.

This might be a silly question, but… is it possible to switch discussion sessions during the open enrollment shenanigans that’s going on tomorrow?

Ugh, it’s never happened to me personally, but I’ve heard about a few messes with that… apparently if you switch discussion sections, you’re dropped (then re-added) to the class, so if there’s a waitlist you lose your registration and get put last on the waitlist. Again, this hasn’t happened to me, so could another student confirm/deny this? Until you get a concrete answer, I’d recommend holding off on switching discussion sections, unless of course the class has a few open slots.

Rodman- I never had that happen to me. I would frequently switch discussion sections in order to carve out my preferred schedule (or to get a specific TA). But that was back in ISIS. I never had the pleasure of using SIS.

I can confirm via the 500 students trying to add/drop CS labs/“discussion” constantly needing to course action themselves/get the prof to add them from the waitlist when changing sections… don’t do it without professor permission if there’s a waitlist!!

No matter what I do, it keeps saying that I don’t have a “valid enrollment” appointment at the time. Is this because SIS isn’t open yet, or because I have too many credits? (my original schedule has 16 credits.) I’m attempting to swap two classes.

No idea. Screen not changing for me :c

Yeah it just kicked me off…I’m just going to go to sleep at this point.
